Socialism, but the stupid-as-heck meaning.

G.K. Chesterton wrote memorably that when people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing, they believe in anything.

Now I've heard this quote atributed to many people over the years, and usualy been spouted by people with an axe to grind about atheists.

Can anyone give me a definete owner of this line, as it is one that people like Dickie love to overuse without giving it any real thought.

One of those smart-arse quotes that when you stop to consider it, it's bollocks. Of course people don't believe in anything - or nothing for that matter - when they stop believing in god, they just stop believing in god.

The problem seems to stem from the fact that no-one really knows the definitive answer. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations attributes it to G.K. Chesterton, but it can't be found in any of Chesterton's works and appears to have begun life as a paraphrase by his biographer Emile Cammaerts.

Had a long argument with a Merrikan who used the 'there are no atheists in foxholes' shit-fer-brains line. Similar level of shallow thinking.

I really hate that. I remember Stephen Fry, many years ago, railing against it. He said he was sick of people who'd say "Never a borrower or a lender be" - and then add "Shakespeare!", as if this lent weight to their aphorism. As he pointed out, it's not Shakespeare who says that, it's Polonius, someone who is in cahoots with the play's villain and thinks it's morally acceptable to spy on his son and pimp out his daughter. And above all is a fictional character. So Shakespeare may intend for the character's advice to be taken with a pinch of salt.

As for Zac Goldsmith, keep in mind that RL is very much a saloon bar 'whatever's easiest to me right now/too much effort to change' conservative. It's not ideology with him, it's laziness.

It's shoddy use of language as well. He's talking about "faith" not "belief".
You can believe something to be true without proof but on the balance of evidence.
Faith requires you to accept something as true without supporting evidence and often in the face of evidence to the contrary.

The next hurricane to hit Florida could turn out to be very ironic.

Can't be arsed to wade through that pile of shit this week. Is he going on about Toyota Priuses yet? I think that's a contractual obligation with any vaguely environment-themed piece.

No, he won't touch anything technical after getting torn to pieces over his "I reckon anyone could fly through an ash cloud" piece a couple of years ago. Lots of pilots and technical people pulled him up on it, pointing out that avionics has moved on a little from 1940.

Much as he'd love Clarkson's level of popularity, it's important to remember that Clarkson knows a hell of a lot about motoring and engineering. Littlejohn just knows what he's read in other journos' science pieces. The laziness thing doesn't just refer to his outlook, it covers his work style as well.

It doesn't need defining. It is patently ridiculously false.

Mr Chesterton was an idiot for saying it.

I do rather like his Father Brown stories though.

My Dad was a big fan. I've only ever read one myself though, not sure why, he's a very talented writer.
