Following on from Daves comment about local papers with daft headlines I thought it would be worth having a thread for them and see if they are as daft as the our favourite rags

Bradfords local press (the Telegraph & Argus) has had a number recently, 'Hoody Madness' sticks in my mind from a couple of weeks ago. Obviously it dosn't go on about asylum seekers and floods of imigrants as much as most since their are so many cultures here,it would probably damage their sales figures. However, they do have their own Hitch/Littledick in the guise of 'Moaning' Mike Priestley on Saturdays.

I will post any bollocks he writes each Sunday

Do you know what group it's owned by?

I get the Uxbridge Leader (Trinity Mirror I believe) through my door each week. It's pretty much adverts and "advertising features", plus a HUGE bit of housing.

There was an "advertising feature" in today's one advertising a sex shop. This following quote made me laugh lots (considering that I find "local" things very funny).

Quote:
Cherry Pye [name of the sex shop] also specialise in naughty novelties, and Shirley says they have the largest selection of tantalising toys available within the W13 area

It amused me anyway...

We get an advertising paper, I miss the two papers i used to get in Southport, they were pretty comedy.

Then again this advertising newspaper on the back asks a "topic of the week":- You usually get alot of common sense, but their is always one nutter

Not really relevant to the discussion, but the Yorkshire Evening Post once ran the headline "Minimum Fuss Over Gay Jesus".

recent headline in the brighton argus: "dad and daughter share a room." this was a front-page story about a housing crisis. obviously it must be inconvenient and embarrassing for a father and teenage daughter to share a room, but that headline just didn't seem as shocking as it was probably intended to be.

NewsQuest are the owners (thought that question was a statement question rather than an actual question as first)

southport.gb.com sometimes features some really funny stories, such as the one where the rides at the fair have been imported from 'Czechoslovakia' and whinging about local petrol prices

A woman on that website believes all homosexuals are Peadophille's and she can't be dissuaded on that point, she comes up with "facts" which are totally made up, well i don't know if she is still there, but she used to post alot.

Here in Essex I get three local newspapers delivered to my door, The Gazette, The Weekly News and The Yellow Advertiser. My dad insists on buying The Telegraph every day and on a Saturday will have both The Telegraph and The Financial Times delivered. Needless to say, I have plenty to read.

I'm not sure who owns these local rags and am not really aware of their political bias. The local papers are a mixture of good and bad, but they do seem to spend an inordinate amount of time reporting about the travellers who live in Crays Hill. This is the biggest gypsy camp in Europe and my family lap up press articles about these people to the poin where they are provoked. If the local rags didn't bitch and whine about these people, whom my late grandmother used to call tinkers, they would have very few sensationalist headlines. If I do see anything exciting, I'll keep you posted.

Sounds much like Exeter's Express & Echo which I rarely buy these days. It was owned by the Mail's parent group, though I'm not sure that it still is. We rarely go 6 weeks without a "grrr, gypsies" story and associated outraged letters. It has gone decidedly tabloidy with some of its headlines and lead stories in recent months.

The letters page seems to attract regular nutters, er I mean valued contributors, who virtually have a letter a day printed. I've had a fairly successfully hit rate with my contributions however so all is not lost.

You do it an injustice. It is the South West Campaigning Newspaper of the Year after all.

I only read it for the footie and to laugh at the ads at the back for "Personal Services"(why do they need to advertise the fact they are hygienic?).

I get the Wimbledon Guardian delivered semi-weekly so most of the nuttiness is in the letter pages. It has a tendency to go for overdramatic headlines though.

Some choice Mail-like quotes from the story about "local traders" wanting the fireworks to be moved from Friday night to stop antisocial behaviour. Or some such shit.

One thing about reading the "Echo" from a distance,it gives the worse possible publicity to the area.Bournemouth Hoteliers and Shopkeepers must groan each day it is published.
Understandable why I'm over here.

And a great response:

Good point Gastines. The perils of having a local version of the Daily Wail.
Well ok maybe its not quite that bad.

Meanwhile, here's how to deal with the unruly:

Get some tear gas, arrest them all, shove them in a net until the parents come collect them and pay a fine if they are under 18 or change them if they are over 18

If only that were possible at least there would be a saturdays peace while its all sorted.

nice letter in the gem. i mean that genuinely i agree with this lady. basic background - every year we have near home the Vale of Glamorgan Show, a nice agricultural show. all the local political parties have stalls out for recruiting party members etc - including among others, the BNP (the vale of glamorgan is a very white, middle class area, apart from Barry, a corner of surry in south wales i promise you).

some people have called for the BNP to be banned from the show but, up steps Mary from Pontyclun.

Quote:
My opinion of the BNP is unprintable: however I must support the Vale of Glamorgan Show organisers in their decision to allow them a stand.

Can you imagine the publicity the BNP would recieve if they were refused? It would be the best free publicity they could get and they would milk it to their best advantage.

Some people may be taken in by their dogma, but the majority see them for what they are.

:)
