Now I would never want to be categorised as politically extreme, I tend to think of myself as a liberal first and so someone who can understand both points of view before thinking about the next move... so is there any truth in the old saying that far-left and far-right meet somewhere in the middle?

"The old saying" ?

You mean the "old saying" that you've just made up and that is totally illogical?

No. Away and fiddle with a bit of a Saab.

To be fair to Emmett, for once, I have heard that before.....

For example....

http://madmikesamerica.com/2011/08/how- ... far-right/

Emmett is asking is there any truth in it.

From my perspective the problem is when people stick to absolute rigid beliefs that they are unable to modify given certain situations (militant politics).

Maybe there are similarities between the far right and far left, with respect to dogma, however there are still differences.

Maybe there are, but similarities in respect of a shared tendency towards dogmatism do not equate to similarities of outlook. To suggest so is quite absurd.

I agree. There are differences otherwise why call them left and right.

Good stick to beat the left with though, isn't it? Or it would be if it wasn't nonsense.

It doesn't help matters that arch right wing barm-pots Melanie Philips and Peter Hitchens used to assiciated with Trokskyist left.

Every Communist and Trotskyist I've ever met has been a good person with a geniune to help make the world a better place and they are better off without these two dangerous idiots.

There are similarities in the people, but not on ideological grounds, It just so happens that extreme versions of any group - left, right, animal welfare, knitting, car ownership, allotments etc tend to contain the far more blinkered and/or more rabid people who get obsessed. Similarly, some of those people just feel the need to be extreme/contrary rather than have any genuine attachment to the cause they are extreme about because it makes them feel "right" to have a minority view and kick up a fuss about it - as if they know some hidden truth and if only everyone listened they'd be ok. See, for example. Peter Hitchens - once rabidly left wing, now rabidly right wing. Probably not particularly fond of listening to anyone else's opinion in either case.

So in summary, left wing and right wing don't meet in the middle, but in all walks of life there are nutters and arrogant wankers.

as I peer squintily through the mists of time:

national front meetings circa 1979 - shouty, bigoted, intolerant, sneery, intimidatory,

SWP meetings circa 1979 - shouty, bigoted........

these are the only similarities I can see (for the minute).

By gum, you've been on a political journey. Did you end up in the SWP or the NF?
:?

How about similarities of beliefs, policies or aims?

Emblejemble's rather ludicrous contention is that the NF and the SWP are actually alike, want the same things and follow the same policies...

But then he's a man who thinks a compulsory passive smoking policy is cutting edge.

me, '79, leicester, disgusted by nf politics but at only 17 curious. didn't don union jack t shirt but went along anyway. nobody queried the lack of shaved head/doc martens. reinforced my teen belief in the futility of neo-nazi politics.

swp meeting in northampton '79. invited by friend. spooked by the evangelical ranting by speaker after speaker. humourless, intense, unpleasant. lasted 3hrs.

ended up anti-blair, moderate left-of-centre (where I remain).

The OP is one Emmett Jenner, big cheese in UKIP and pal to Nargle Fargle. The poor boy is very confused.
