In November 2006 A chap called Craig Smith wrote a piece called "Made in the USA: Spoiled brats". You can read it here.

It's an interesting eye-opener. And it could quite easily be adapted to the UK where it should be forcibly shoved down the throats of Mail readers.

I agree with what the guy is saying, but I take objection to (quite obviously) his claim that Bush has "protected everyone from terrorists" by invading Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, the article is pretty typical US jingoism - "the most blessed people in the world" and "the world loves the US". There's a lot to be said for being grateful for what you have, but in a country with the highest rich/poor divide in the developed world, voicing an objection doesn't make you a "spoiled brat".

Also, I don't think this happens in the UK much:

Quote:
Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes; an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

I'd not count on it happening in the US either.

The article is bollocks. Yes western democracy is better than tyranny but that doesn't mean people are happy with the way the smirking chimp is mismanaging the government. It's not an either or situation.

Looking to the positives for your own well being (i.e. if you dwell on the negative you’ll send yourself loopy) is great but it doesn't mean one shuts the fuck up about incompetence and malfeasance in the Bush admin or the feet dragging in the congress over doing something about it.

Granted, it is over hyped - kind of the exact opposite of the DM's way of thinking, but I do agree with what he's effectively saying: stop believing the continued shite you're fed and that the world will end tomorrow. Instead concentrate on your day to day life and realise that you could be in a really shitty country.
I think he's as sick of their equivalent of Mail readers as we are of ours.
The Bush debate is like the Labour debate. He's done some good, he's done some worse.. though yes, his worse is very much worse. It's rare his good is mentioned though.

Rarely? I've NEVER heard it mentioned. Could you give an example off the top of your head?

Satire in the US is booming.

I take and accept your point, and no I can't (though I'm not a huge news follower)
I was being speculative. Bush is made out as the anti-christ the same way Blair is, although Bush seems to be the bigger target - is this due to him being a bigger fuckup or because he rules a bigger country?
I was being speculative, If he really was satan himself then I think the USA would really be a real horror story and no-go area. As it stands they seem to be doing relatively okay.

Of course I might be completely wrong, I just don't believe in 100%-negativity.

No, he's writing the article in response to survey results on what people think of the US Governments performance. And they aren't happy with it in the main. What the article is saying is this:

"You ungrateful bastards! Don't you have electricity, don't you have consumer goods? Then shut up about the way the country is being run!"

And that is complete and total bollocks, not least of which because one of the benefits of living in a free society is that one can gripe about the way said society is running.

And as for the good Bush has done, well I suppose he's encouraged people to get a bit more exercise, but aside from that...

And he's not Satan; he's just venal and inept with a patina of piety. Clinton taught by example that oral sex wasn't cheating, Bush has taught that incompetence and cronyism is hunky-dory. I tend to find the latter lesson to be more corrosive.
