Can anyone find out who gave Paul Thomas the award for "Political Cartoonist of the Year" ? I can't seem to pin this one down . That title ,it would seem , is awarded by the Cartoon Art Trust . The last recipient was in 2006 ( not yet awarded this year , nominations aren't even in ) and that was Peter Brookes of the Times . As far as I can pin down , from 1995 to 2005 the winners were Steve Bell , Peter Brookes , Bell again , unknown , Bell again , Martin Rowson , Bell again , Dave Gaskill (?uncertain?), Rowson again , Dave Brown ,and Steve Bell again. Only one site , a gallery, has any info on Thomas which claims he not Bell Got the award in 2005 ( chrisbeetles.com ....
Quote:
In 2005, Thomas won the Cartoon Art Trust’s Political Cartoonist of the Year award and the Political Society’s Tenniel Tankard

- the Tankard is a runners up prize in the Political Cartoon Society's Awards more below). The BBC , Guardian , Leeds University , and Matt the cartoonist and his blog firmly have 2005 being Steve Bells . None of the other awards went to Thomas last time either....I checked by phoning the Trust .Info on previous years was not forthcoming as the curator isn't there.
As to the Political Cartoon Society , they award for "Cartoonist of the Year" , that's the full title , "Cartoon of the Year" and the Tankard as a sort of runner-up type thing .Cartoonist 2006 (again this years ceremony to come) went to Peter Brookes. 2005=Steve Bell and 2004 = Dave Brown.
Things don't get much better when you include the What the Papers Say Award for Cartoonist and the British Press Awards also for Cartoonist .What the Papers 2004 to 2006 goes Matt , Brookes, Matt .BPA 2005 to 2007 goes Bill Caldwell , Gerald Scarfe , Peter Brooke .
These , it seems ,are the main awards generally and only one does the title Political Cartoonist of the Year . There is a Cartoonist's Club of Great Britain , but precious little about them and not held at the level of the first two .
So , is Thomas political cartoonist of the year , or has he been political cartoonist of the year? Was the award given by The Express Cartoonist Awards (should have still bloody lost) ? I need good information , answers and clarification . I need to get a life.

After a nice chat with a man at the Political Cartoon Society , he seems to think Thomas was cartoonist of the year by the Cartoon Art Trust in 2005 , so why Bell is mentioned again in all the other references I do not know . I can't say what anyone else directly said in trying to check up but sources note (and no this is not a man in the pub ) that the Cartoon Art Trust has been a pet project of Kenneth Baker ( formerly of the Thatcher years ). His aim was to set up a museum in London for cartoons which he thought was desperately needed(now done ) and the awards are a promotional vehicle for that . The Political Cartoon Society also runs a small gallery in central London. Anyway , the Trust it is felt tries to share out the awards as certain artists are considered to have a much higher status than certain other ohhhh , maybe Express type artists , and continually receive an award . Thus the successful ones are periodically banned from winning to keep everyone happy . The Trust is a charity that likes donations by the way . I could not possibly suggest any time when standards may have been lowered .
Legally I should point out that this is lies and a work of fiction.

So there you have it (or perhaps not) . Paul Thomas , not as good as other artists , cartoonist of the year.........2005. Not now. 2007. The Express , sometimes correct with the aid of a Tardis.

Didn't Brown say that we needed to clamp down on immigration, infact it was possibly one of the only things i could link back to it being a speech for tory voters.

Do I really have to spell it out for you? You could write your own bullshit line for this one. How about a picture of David Cameroon and the speech bubble/caption would be "Oh my fuck isn't he just marvellous...and by the way did you know Gordon Brown eats babies?" . Or how about pin striped banker picks up tart for sun dune fun? I mean Jesus , it's hardly political satire here. How the fuck does this man sleep at night.

Best alternative caption wins a bottle of Polish beer*

A new low for Thomas , and that's difficult for me to imagine . Well done on associating feeling gloomy ( by which it can only be assumed you mean depression ) , on the need for a straight jacket and a padded cell . Perhaps in the coming weeks we can have a hilarious depiction of frontal lobotomies being used to cure Down's syndrome , or electro-convulsive therapy for those with a cleft palate.

God this has made me feel depressed . Of course I will now have to don my hand-stitched suit of skin from my many many victims (created when I was feeling a bit glum )and dance under a full moon.

Here are a few recent cartoons.

I will give a pound to anyone who laughs at any of them (I'm being serious, so be honest)

I don't reckon they're meant to be funny (good job too), I reckon they're meant to put the news into pretty pictures, for the less educated readers (most of them I sense)

I like the way some of them have newspapers put into the corner so that you know what the cartoon's about...
