I'm glad that tax avoidance has started getting more and more coverage recently. Hopefully people will start to realise how bad it is for society. Sadly, I don't think it will make much of a difference to people who are rich enough to spend their money on working out how not to pay taxes.

Well Ms Mctigue replied with these comforting words..

Fortunately Larry , everyone is not like you. Most people believe that we are entitled to our opinions and that includes me. I object very strongly to NHS money being spent at A & E depts on these people night after night after night.

Wel thats shut me up-....

Her letter mentioned nothing about A&E

Quote:
..If they are happy to spend money on booze in order to get into that state, leaving themselves wide open and so vulnerable to abuse, etc then they bring it on themseves.

That doesn't read like an objection to NHS money being spent on them after suffering a booze-related accident does it?

I thought he was leaving to get away from the constant press hounding and public obsession? Bit stupid to complain about tax when your one of the most highly paid sportsman in the world, don't think he will get much simpathy

my reply to numb nuts joan...

So as a councilor you think its ok to spout off in the Daily mail (and use use your title to give it more clout) that physical attack and rape is par for the course and excusable if your re drunk. thank god you dont represent me- what a very unpleasant person you sound.
Also note that drinkers pay a hefty amount in tax for their privilege to get treated by a doctor.

He had claimed that he was going just to get away from press intrusion, but nobody believed him.

It's good that he's admitted the real reason behind it. He's certainly got no sympathy from me though. No doubt any interviewers from now on will have to sign a prenup that agrees to no questions about him being tax dodging scum.

Mail readers are revolting!
They're taking to the streets in hoards (or rather saying they support others who might do it while they watch from behind their quivering Daily Mails)!

Is this the revolution that follows the groundswell of opinon against 10 years of Labour rule? No, petrol's gone up again

£1 litre drives protesters back to the fuel blockades

Some budding Che Guavaras here though:

Quote:
I agree wholeheartedly for a new petrol protest! The only thing this tzar in 10 Downing Street understands is countrywide protest. Maybe at last, this country is beginning to wake from the stupor of the Bliar/Brown chloroform, which has stupefied their attitude to dissent and protest over outrageous government and taxation.

- Kathab, Oxford, UK

G-ooo Kathab, g-oooo Kathab.

Quote:
More power tpo the protesters. Bring the UK to a standstill and maybe politicians might listen. I won't hold my breath, though.

- Rob, London

Neither will I Rob, neither will I.

Quote:
This is what we need! Some action taken against this government, they won't listen to reason - it's time to start striking back!

- Stu Taylor, Norwich Norfolk

We're right behind you Stu!

Quote:
The more that join the better.

- M Harrington, Hitchin

Words don't come more sagely than that.

Quote:
I would fully support any blockades, the price for fuel in this country is unbelievable, I have to put £220 a month in my 1.4 Peugeot just to get to work everyday.

- Steg, Hinckley

Work closer to home...?

Quote:
Tell me where and when and I up for it. The alternative is for everyone to boycott a specific fuel company for a week at a time and get the multinationals to put pressure on McBroon. BP this week Esso next week etc.

- Gary, Leicester, England

Gary's up for it. Anyone else?

Quote:
All motorists should support this Protest. Petrol Duty should not be used as a easy source of Tax Revenue by this waste of space government.

- Mike Adams, Taunton. UK

The shocking truth at last! Petrol duty is just another form of taxation!

Quote:
Don't drive for a week, that should sort the government out, if that does not work the motorist hit the oil companies one week at a time.

- Michael, Hereford, England

Yeah, that'll teach 'em!

Quote:
The tax on fuel is not causing the high prices - it is because the supply is running out. Get over it and used to it. You moaning drivers should buy low fuel cars, move nearer to your place of work, get on your bikes or setup a car share scheme.

- Ben, London, UK

Oh dear, Ben. You poor, misguided fool. This is a REVOLUTION!

Quote:
Interesting, one would assume that this would be the biggest new story in the UK at present, yet there is absolutely no mention of it on the BBC news website. Now does that imply that this story is just so much hogwash or that the BBC are surpressing it?

- Ajp, UK

Ajp might be on to something...

Yeah! Down with these easy forms of taxation! We need more difficult ones. Ones like inheritance tax! That's bloody complicated. Let's support that one!

Write back and say "Saying that those people shouldn't be treated because they put themselves in that position suggests that climbers in the mountains or people drowning in the sea shouldn't be rescued because they put themselves there. In fact it's not the same because climbers don't contribute financially to mountain rescue."

You know, I dunno whether the Mail is just incredibly clever, or some people are really fucking stupid.

They manage to print stories that are racist, stereotyping, scaremongering, overblown, inaccurate, hypocritical, sexist (well, women haters), contradictory, ironic...
They manage to be quite possibly the most hated uk paper, with one comedian or another having a pop every week. They show up on tons of blogs, not usually in a good light.
and yet still 2.5 million people each day goes out and spends 45p on one and will even go as far as to defend the paper against attacks.

Do we really live among so many fucking idiots?!

Yes, but that's the 2.5 million most selfish, intolerant, misguided, bigoted, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and racist people in the country.

Still, 2.5 million utter arsewipes out of 60-odd million isn't bad. The odds of meeting them are reasonably low. Especially if you avoid the areas they congregate. By which I mean Surrey.

Although, of course, just because the circulation is that high, it doesn't necessarily mean they all feel that way. My dad buys the Mail, and even though he's getting more right-wing in his old age, he still disagrees with huge chunks of it ("Richard Littlejohn? All he does is rant about stuff he's made up. What an arse."). The people who frequent the message boards are a vocal minority of a minority. Take heart.

Although by the same token there's plenty of people like my mum who never buys the paper but does take everything at face value;

i.e that infamous PCSO story. She was all rararar and I simply said 'Look, does that sound like the most likely account of events? It MIGHT be, but wait and see'

lo and behold!

I live with one :(
Her opinion is 'yes the Mail is spot on' though if I round on a particular story and work through it slowly, pointing out that it just doesn't make sense, she may accept it... until the next story comes out then it's back to 'of course it's accurate'. Uphill struggle is an understatement.

This is true, I suspect the actual, erm, "fanatical" element is fairly small. They're usual the most vocal and there aren't a huge number of unique names with inane comments.

But even so, that's still 2.5 million people a day who think it's got enough integrity to make it worth buying and reading.
