Oh how the Mail loves to spout bollocks about the net.

For my part, having read the report, I logged on to Facebook for the first time. There, I discovered that anyone - without offering a single detail about themselves - can search and locate images and details of people who have enrolled.

Register yourself - for free - and you can leave messages. It is a stalker's dream come true, and I can see why so many parents are gravely concerned about it.

"She adores these virtual worlds so much that quite often when we want to go out for a family day trip, she no longer seems keen to come with us," says Helen Grayson. "It honestly seems as if she prefers her 'virtual' friends to us."

Or, she doesn't want to spend time with her parents? I know I spent loads of time with my parents when I was a teenager.

The Joneses are also worried about the video clips Daniel watches on YouTube. "He is obsessed with crashes," his mother says. "Plane crashes and car crashes. I am also worried about the bad language he is exposed to. Some of the messages he exchanges with his friends are shocking and full of swear words."

Before the internet, kids never swore.

Oh aye, I accidentally clicked on the pornography. I am a teenage boy, what possible interest could I have in pictures of naked women?

The whole attitude is symptomatic of the Mail's world-view. The internet is the single biggest collection of human knowledge in history. It enables instant, cheap communication between continents. It's probably, to date, our finest achievement as a species (maybe, the wheel's pretty good too). And all the Mail can do is pick holes, highlight the dangers and problems.

Which is pretty ironic given the amazing success of the Mail's own website. It's second only to The Guardian in the UK.

The Mail's opinion of the Internet is nothing short of comedy genius. And it would actually be funny if there weren't kids missing out because their parents read articles written by fucking morons.

"Welcome to Mail Online.
The Internet is evil, satan himself invented it. Facebook and bebo WILL kill your child. Wikipedia WILL rape your entire family. By the way, click some ads and generate us some income."

Wankstains.

They hate it because it gives the user the real ablity to question the media and the world around them.

Thats why they hate it.

God that article is retarded.

Quote:
"I was still very concerned that she was up so late. I find too much internet use disturbs Shannon's sleep patterns. She becomes very tired in the morning and it is hard to get her out of bed.

"But then, if she's been on the computer late at night, her mind is buzzing and she can't sleep."

A teenager, having trouble getting out of bed in the morning? SHOCK.

"Accidentally" eh? Thats the same excuse I used on my parents.

All that bullshit about their kids spending hours on the internet is stupid too, you can easily control access to sites on the web, and password it so they can only access it when you say.

Yup. Parental control is piss easy on teh webz. I can block pop ups, scripts et al without some overpriced parental control thing. In an ideal world my kids wouldn't look at this stuff (although by then they'll probably have VR and I'll be too busy running around a sci fi dystopia to give a shit), but knowing what I did, they will. It's called trust and good parenting! (!!!!!!)

I like this bit from the article:

Quote:
And so children, rather than their parents, are winning the battles over computer use, battles being fought out daily in thousands of caring middle-class homes.

I pretty much gave up at this point

A teenager staying up late and sleeping in the next morning. That'll be the internet's fault then.

Yes, the internet is the modern day 'idiot's lantern' from, you've guessed it, the 1950s.

Also like how middle-class homes have a patent on caring

I like that they explain what popups are. What is this, 1998?

Anyone who's internet savvy shouldn't have seen a popup in years.

Pop-ups seem to have become contained, like lepers. You won't come accross any for weeks, maybe months, then you click on one link and suddenly there's thousands of the little buggers
