I love how the Mail insists on calling every tax increase a 'stealth' one when all these things get announced in the fucking Budget. This was first announced in Alastair Darling's 2007 pre-Budget, and was part of Brown's 2008 Budget, at which time the Mail among others claimed it was a stealth tax. A year on and this increase, announced in the last Budget and widely covered in the mainstream media, somehow still qualifies as stealthy.

If these announcements go unnoticed by the public, it's because the media has failed its job, but since the papers were moaning about this a year ago they're just being disingenuous now. Other ways in which this exact same bit of news was reported by the Mail alone:

Brown faces business backlash over '£2.6bn-a-year cost' of National Insurance hike ("The measure means that middle income families earning more than £40,000 will lose an extra £195-a-year")

NATIONAL INSURANCE: Surprise hike to hit middle income families with extra £551 bill ("The Chancellor's increase in National Insurance contributions of half a percentage point will strip an extra £195 a year from those households earning about £45,000")

Thing is when you use this site...

http://www.listentotaxman.com/

a person earning 45,000 a year is still better off by 300 pounds from last year.

"A glass of wine has as many calories as four fish fingers: Government to target drinkers in calorie counting campaign"

Quote:
Middle-class drinkers are to be targeted in a Government campaign warning exactly how many calories are contained in a glass of wine or beer.

Ministers are concerned that the average wine drinker now consumes around 2,000 calories from alcohol alone each month.

That is the equivalent of 38 extra roast beef suppers or almost 184 bags of crisps a year.

Middle Class - WTF? I suppose cos its wine and not Special Brew

Quote:
The Government is increasingly concerned about the alcohol intake of the middle classes.

Wot no "Nanny State"?

Quote:
Its latest statistics suggest middle-aged, professionals are more likely to exceed recommended daily levels of alcohol consumption than the working class, with twice as many drinking each night of the week.

Almost one in four middle-class drinkers admit indulging in 'heavy' drinking, which is deemed to be double the recommended daily limit, at least once a week.

Oh bummer, so now they can't use their homes as cash machines or move every three years. As a renter who's been priced out for years despite being considered a high earner, my heart just bleeds.

I completely agree Fflaps. I'm in exactly the same position.

They are being hit particularly hard because the Government has not increased tax bands in line with wage growth, say researchers.

Isn't this a slightly different take on another recent "story"?

It's a weird story; they're essentially defining middle-class by how much tax you pay, and then acting surprised when it's higher. You could just as easily have written the story "Taxpayers in middle-class towns earn 2.5 times as much as those in less affluent areas". If Hull had the same tax burden as St Albans the average income after income tax would be about £13k.

As far as I can make out, the thrust of this story is that we're supposed to feel sorry for £43k-a-year earners in St Albans while imagining that life in Hull is some kind of glorious paradise. And oh look, another completely idiotic use of the phrase 'stealth tax':

Quote:
Stealth tax by another name. What's next - a return to window tax?
Dr Stephen Fox, Sydney Australia, 20/4/2009 8:26

Is there anything remotely stealthy about fucking INCOME TAX? Announced in every budget, right there on your payslip every month, they've really kept that one under wraps.

Fly earns about £57,000 a year, he takes home £38,500 a year shouldn't have had kids should he.

The thing about paying more in tax, some areas generally have lower wages, take Cornwall you could do basically the same job for 3 grand more in Bristol than you can down here. Cornwall has some of the highest house prices and yet the lowest wages.

The amount of stupidity surrounding that story is reaching new heights even for the Mail and its readership.

People who earn more money pay more tax? Who fucking knew?

Income tax? When was this openly advertised and commonly known "stealth tax" introduced by NULiebor?

Pitt the Younger? Who? Is he a ZanuLie-bore junior minister?
