Mail vs Jimmy Carr

I'm going to pre-empt the Mail and assume this is going to be Ross/Brand Mk 2.

The main thing about Jimmy Carr is you know what you're in for, no subject area is taboo, so if you're likely to get hardons every time The Sun and The Mail goes on about Our Boys then you might be better off staying away from his shows.

The main thing is, it's a joke. It's not real. Of course injured troops aren't going to enter the Paraolympics. And yet the Mail encourages readers not to suspend their disbelief for one second and realise that, nope, they're going to write in to whoever may employ Carr and complain.

I've submitted a comment that if you find this offensive you're part of the Stasi-PC thought police, ought to vex a few of them with any luck. Just as well this wasn't on the BBC or else we'd never hear the end of it. Oh if only Michael McIntyre had said it.

Well actually, they might. In fact previously very fit and active young men who suddenly find themselves lacking a limb or two are arguably just the sort of people who really do take part in the paralympics.

In which case the joke isn't just a joke, it has an element of plausibility to it as well. Which makes the knee-jerk outrage all the more ridiculous.

I don't actually find Jimmy Carr that funny, but there's really not much to take offence at in that joke.

Anyone who thinks this sort of thing is off topic in regards to jokes has never met a squaddie. Gallows humor is quite standard amongst troops.

Have any actual soldiers complained about this? I suspect its merely disgusted of tumbridge wells who has a problem.

If he'd made this joke about homosexuality, black people, Muslims etc and someone complained, we'd hear the usual screams of PC Gone Mad. Typical Mailites.

Maybe what Littlejohn writes is really just a load of jokes in the guise of nasty generalisations, so maybe we shouldn't read his columns for fear of being offended?

But there is a bit of a difference, isn't there? I mean this is a joke by a stand-up comedian in a theatre with, perhaps, 1,000 people present, if that, as part of a set. Whereas the other regurgitates the same stuff every week to 2,000,000 (at least) people.

The fact that Carr has been to visit injured soldiers in a hospital indicates he obviously doesn't think this sort of thing in real life. When was the last time Littledick volunteered handing out soup in a refuge for immigrants?

I wouldn't be surprised if Carr actually picked up the joke from the injured soldiers. Members of the armed forces usually use a lot of gallows humour (and who could blame them?)
