Vanity Blair: Now even Cherie is tiring of Tony's jetset life - and his rampaging ego
Despite stepping down two years ago, Blair has continued to be a hate figure for the Daily Mail. Much of their comments on him seem to be unsubstantiated and may well be made up for all I know but there you go.
The domestic staff at Tony Blair's grand London residence are in mutinous mood.
There is much tut-tutting, exasperated whispers behind hands and stifled below-stairs curses.
The subject of their ire is the positively lordly behaviour of their master. Mr Blair has, it seems, developed a taste for being waited on hand and foot.
Likewise, the former Prime Minister doesn't usually bother to pull out the plug after emerging from his morning bath or to put his sweaty sports gear into the laundry basket after his daily work-out in the gym he has had installed in his home close to Hyde Park.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, his staff at the house in Connaught Square are far from happy. There are dark mutterings that he treats the place as nothing more than a hotel on his increasingly infrequent visits home.
His regular absences from home and Cherie's own busy diary, which involved her spending much of last month in America promoting her excruciatingly indiscreet autobiography, Speaking For Myself, have meant the couple have been apart rather more than they would wish.
Friends say the couple have found it hard to adjust to spending such long periods away from each other. 'It's certainly created tension,' one close friend of the Blairs confessed to me this week.
'Tony is hardly ever here. Cherie, particularly, has found it difficult to deal with because they were used to spending so much time together when he was PM.
'Tony is fantastically busy and there have been rows about how much time he spends away. But quite frankly he is absolutely loving life at the moment and he adores America.'
I like it. They've got no named sources for many of their allegations, with 'one close friend of the Blairs' being used. I wonder who that could be- the man in the corner shop who sells Blair a newspaper once in a blue moon?
Then there's this picture of him riding an elephant with a comment so funny that my teeth fell out while laughing.
I just cannot wait to read the comments from the readers- they'll be in full froth mode!
