I've probably missed an existing thread on this topic, surely! However, as it's at the very least buried, I'll begin again:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... dream.html
'Facial recognition phone application described as stalkers dream'
In human = 'Gimmicky phone app we don't understand will scare our readers shitless'

Apparently a phone app will search Facebook and Twitter using facial recognition in order to match a photo you take of someone in the street.
This will apparently give strangers your home address, PIN number, bank details AND allow unchecked immigration into the country. Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?!?!??

As a quick follow-up, the ironing was too delicious to resist on this one:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... roups.html
'Facebook campainers call for tougher controls on racist and cyberhate groups'

Why oh why did the comments section have to be closed by the time I found this?

Well, it will give them any information you've made public on a social networking site, which is why you have to be tremendously stupid to a) share this information in the first place and b) then click the 'show to all' button in the privacy settings. The less information you make public on a social networking website the better.

Is it time to get out the tin foil and the hat pattern?

You should have it on anyway as the ZaNuLieBore thought police can read your mind and designate you racist before subjecting you to trial by BBC

I think the Mails caustic attitude towards Facebook was commented on in the 'Mail vs the Internets thread'

Draws balanced and pragmatic comments like this:

Quote:
I think it's time to close Facebook down. Every day we hear and read of tragedies like this. Facebook is no more than an out let for cowards to bully and blackmail. If people want to communicate then what is wrong with the numerous other methods.
- Mrs Baker, Stamford, Lincolnshire., 05/3/2010 06:15

Do they really think this girl would've suffered any less without the involvement of Facebook?

You could alter her last sentence to read 'If people want to bully then what is wrong with the numerous other methods'. Bullying has sadly always existed, banning Facebook would hardly put a stop to it. When I was at school several people were quite effectively bullied (so to speak) without the benefit of the internet.

Such as commenting on news stories in the Mail, especially ones about how disgraceful some female celebrity or other looks.

Brilliantly ridiculous outrage-hungry story about Facebook this morning by male Mail writer who posed on Facebook as a 14 year old girl and received chat requests off dirty old men within 90 seconds... only for the commenters to point out that Facebook does not work like that at all. Cue hastily re-written article headline now refering to yur more generic type of social networking site, shame the URL points out the original blatanbullshit element:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... n-you.html

I'm in the middle of a post on this one. Turns out the guy in the article didn't write it (it's billed right at the bottom as an interview) and he didn't use Facebook or even claim to.
