there was michael grade i guess.

No, I mean it. The basic premise is average and the execution has invariably been poor. Bad acting, low production values, storylines that would embarrass Bagpuss, cardboard sets, wooden actors and rubber cheques,

I've got a friend who goes to conventions - that's inexplicable.

And this from a man who has nine references in the Nitpicker's Guide to Star Trek...

Some of us like it. Don't like it, don't watch it. Then you have nothing to complain about. Simples.

I don't watch it. Not since I was about 10.
But I genuinely don't understand why anyone thinks that it's any good.

Perhaps it's a postmodernist ironic statement?

I like the show primarily for the storylines and C/G effects, but can we really define it when we "like" something? Some people like certain things and others just don't see why. I can't understand why one of my friends likes heavy metal music, but who am I to criticise?

i've never gotten into star trek (or wars for that matter), and i have tried, i really have. i guess it's just not to my taste. i don't know why i like doctor who, it's sci-fantisy really, although, so is starwars and i actively dislike that (though that is more out and out fantisy, just, in space), much of the rest of my sci-fi taste is for "harder" fare, philip k dick, the thing, moon, and so on, and you'd think trek would fit in there, but i still don't get on with it. i do have a soft spot for cheese, things like logans run and such, so maybe my affection for "..who" fits in there, or perhaps my taste is just a bit random.

my point is, doctor who is what is it, its not "bad" it's just, doctor who.

*edits out further comments about what may constitute bad sci-fi, lest i just bitch endlessly about "the island", although i will admit, it is so bad as to be fun to bitch at*

Well part of the appeal of the old show was the crappy effects, giving it a cult value. Now that the effects are really good its somewhat lost that side but has in turn become a sci-fi show that can easily hold it's own against anything the US has to offer. Still, it does required a certain interest in sci-fi to 'get in'.

Do feel though that it's a little to 'Earth centric' now with too many stories related to humanity.

Oh dear lord Malcolm is there anything you won't whine about?

Also you say it has "Bad acting, low production values, storylines that would embarrass Bagpuss, cardboard sets, wooden actors and rubber cheques," Yet you also you haven't watched it since you were 10? Come on.

(and whats wrong with conventions? From what i've heard the doctor who ones are full of sex, lol)

I'm a bit of a Who widower, actually - my girlfriend's a massive fan. I sometimes wonder how much Doctor Who I would watch if I wasn't going out with her.

And yes, the couple of Doctor Who conventions I've been to have had the occasional bondage/goth couple on the look-out for swingers. But on the whole, Who conventions seem to be the domain of the self-important and the pedantic - so I can't imagine how anyone on Daily Mail Watch would fit in.

One or two, perhaps.

Sorry, old bean, if you can't tell the difference between whining and having your rather-too-sincere leg pulled...

I do recall watching the very first episode, the day after Kennedy was killed. At the time I did not realise the true significance. Just what a legend Dr Who would become!
