This is an odd story about the UK’s absence from the Munich Security conference at a time military willy waving is the only international collateral the country now has
Britain’s lack of presence at Munich security conference sparks concern among allies

The glaring absence of high-ranking figures from London has not escaped notice. Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat speaker of the House of Representatives – part of the largest ever US delegation to the conference – said: “I hope it’s not an indication of their commitment to multilateralism.”

Veteran diplomats spoke of their surprise and sadness at Britain’s evaporating international footprint. Carl Bildt, the former Swedish prime minister, tweeted: “The one nation that is only completely absent from MSC2020 [Munich Security Confernce 2020] is the UK. Very strange, minsters were supposed to come, but then everyone withdrew. Has ‘Global Britain’ gone completely introvert?”

Wolfgang Ischinger, formerly of the German foreign ministry and one of the conference organisers, tweeted: “Needless to say, as a former ambassador to the Court of St James, I am saddened by the absence of senior ministers of Her Majesty’s government at @MunSecConf this year.” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 38051.html

Get to the back of the queue
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has canceled a trip to the US planned for next month after a furious phone call from President Donald Trump in which Trump slammed down the phone on the prime minister.

Johnson had been due to visit Washington last month but repeatedly delayed the trip after a series of rows with the president over Iran, Huawei, and a rejected request by the prime minister to extradite the wife of a US diplomat.

The disagreements culminated in a phone call last month in which Trump hung up on Johnson, according to officials with knowledge of the conversation.

Johnson has now canceled his trip altogether, and is not planning on visiting the country until the G7 summit in June.

A Downing Street source confirmed that the trip had been cancelled due to fears of further clashes with the president.

However, Downing Street insisted on Thursday that Johnson would concentrate instead on his domestic agenda over the coming months. https://www.businessinsider.com/boris-j ... tic-2020-2
The Huwawei issue isn’t just about Trump’s absurd trade wars and has cross party backing
Top US officials have threatened and cajoled European allies as cracks in the western alliance were laid bare at the Munich transatlantic security conference.

Nancy Pelosi, Democrat House of Representatives speaker, issued a rebuke to European countries which are using China’s Huawei to build 5G mobile communications networks, saying they had taken a “very dangerous” path.

“It's about putting the state police in the pocket of every consumer,” she said on Sunday. “The debate on 5G is about security, it's about economy, it's about values.” https://www.ft.com/content/19fa7046-4fe ... 2eed0038b1

Johnson will have to cave on this.

Who could have known international trade was hard?
Suez for slow learners. I'm more enthusiastic than most about joints venture with China but why the government wants go to the wire for Huawei I don't know. These are ultimately political decisions and you can't even trust Swiss security.
A Swiss company thought to have sold among the most secure encryption products in the world was actually owned by US and German intelligence, allowing the CIA and BND to spy on allies and enemies around the world, it has emerged.

A new report from The Washington Post and Germany’s ZDF claims that Crypto AG, founded during the Second World War, struck a deal with the CIA in the 50s and then passed fully into the hands of US and German intelligence two decades later, before being wound up in 2018.

Internal reports about the operation, codenamed “Thesaurus” and then renamed “Rubicon” in the 80s, reportedly claim it was “the intelligence coup of the century.”

“Foreign governments were paying good money to the US and West Germany for the privilege of having their most secret communications read by at least two (and possibly as many as five or six) foreign countries,” the article claimed.

This “five or six” figure would seem to suggest that countries belonging to the Five Eyes intelligence sharing partnership also benefited. In fact, it is claimed that the UK was handed vital intelligence intercepted from the Argentinian military during the Falklands war. https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/n ... cia-spied/

As seems to have been suggested on a BBC SYB - he's got the votes, he's got the power, why should he care any more?

Anyway, he's probably got another holiday lined up: where would a UK Mar A Lago be, do you think?

A literal translation would suggest Herefordshire. All of it.

Has Boris Johnson visited a single hospital or stepped foot in Yorkshire since the election?
Johnson is resigned to being a marmite character and will get a level of abuse where ever he goes. This wouldn’t even be considered if he had a moral compass and sense of duty that comes with national leadership but he’s a scumbag.
