There are other consequential benefits to adding to national rail capacity via HS2 as well. Because HS2 will free up capacity on existing routes, there is scope for more freight to be transported by rail, which in turn frees up capacity on our congested motorways.

The benefits of HS2 do not amount to a vanity project to give business men another 20 minutes to buy a doughnut at Euston, as is commonly assumed.

Yeah yeah but what about Geoffery Palmer's garden?

Seriously, the right wing press were all for HS2, right until they realised some nice gardens in the Chilterns might get squished.

Chris Grayling sent cyclist flying with his car door, video shows

Footage shows Grayling was accompanied by his fellow transport minister Paul Maynard, who left the scene, while Simon Jones, a former Conservative parliamentary candidate and now special adviser to Grayling, is seen watching the scene unfold as he puts his identity badge in his jacket pocket.

After the taxpayer-funded heavy mob retook privately-run Birmingham prison, Liz Truss said: “I want to pay tribute to the bravery and dedication of the prison officers who resolved this disturbance … Violence in our prisons will not be tolerated and those responsible will face the full force of the law.” Grayling and Gove first, I hope.

Current score card on Grayling's time as Lord Chancellor:

Residence test for legal aid: unlawful.
Ban on legal aid for prisoners: unlawful.
Test for payment of legal aid for judicial review cases: unlawful and modified as a result.
Death rate in prisons following various Grayling interventions: up 69% in a single year.
General safety in prisons now accepted as very low.

Why is someone with that track record in government at all? Let alone the idiot who keeps him there.

Scotland will benefit from HS2, vows Chris Grayling

Ann MacDuhi1 hr ago
"Scotland will benefit from a new high-speed rail line which will create business opportunities, jobs and skills, according to UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling."
Yea sure.
The entire project will cost £57 Billion and Scotland will contribute £5.7 Billion of that whether we like it or not.

Oh dear ! Another Vow !
Scotland and the North ( of England ) would have benefited IF they begin the HS2 project from Scotland . If they ( Tories ) were really serious about wanting to help Scottish businesses then start it from here ! What is the problem ?

The only reasons HS2 is so expensive is the need to tunnel under very expensive bits of London and then placate the bellyaching masses who whine "but what about the Chilterns?" all the time.

Never once thinking how much more disruptive and disfiguring an eight lane motorway through the fucking Chilterns would be.
