Grayling didn't turn up to answer an urgent question in the HoC about the £33m Eurotunnel payment.

He sent Matt Hancock instead. Hancock replied with the same two lines to every question, which basically boiled down to everyone needing to vote for May's deal if they wanted to keep their medicine supplies.

He mansplained (not a word I usually use, but seemingly apt here) at Layla Moran before telling everybody in the chamber that what she'd said meant that she obviously didn't care about this serious business.

Moran demanded an apology.

Bercow very tactfully gave him an opportunity to apologise.

He didn't.

He then proceeded to refuse to answer any questions on Seaborne Freight on the grounds that they weren't relevant (despite it being, y'know, why Eurotunnel got upset).

When Bercow said that any reasonable person, himself included, would assume that the two things were related, Hancock tried to argue with Bercow that he, the Speaker, must've interpreted the question wrong when he cleared it for debate.

All of this made excellent ammunition for the SNP, who stood up afterwards and asked the speaker if there was any way to compel Grayling to show up, since the substitute sent was obviously too badly briefed to understand the question.

An utter embarrassment all 'round.

Grayling finds himself reshuffled out on the day before the next meaningful vote so that his mistakes are pored over and the queues form to denounce his silliness, thereby creating maximum distraction.

Anyone want a crisp tenner on this?

£33m Eurotunnel payout not recoverable, government confirms

Details of out-of-court settlement reveals three £11m payments due whatever Brexit outcome
The health secretary, Matt Hancock, who was dispatched to take questions in place of the transport secretary, Chris Grayling, told MPs that the £33m was a “maximum exposure”, hinting that some of the money could be recoverable.

Confirmation that the payments will be made whatever the outcome of Brexit negotiations will heap further embarrassment on Grayling
