But what's his end game? He doesn't need the cash - heir to fortune, massive consultancies, MP. No background in journalism, save for a couple of graduate job applications.

He's staying as Tatton MP. What does he think the Standard job can do for him? Help make him PM? Or...run against Sadiq Khan for Mayor in 2020?

Some are saying he is easing himself out of politics but I more inclined to believe Andrew Neil's take; its his war chest to attack May if Brexit goes tits up. Osborne is a politician to his fingertips why would he retire without a fight to the dying world of print journalism?

And the Standard is the nearest you will get to a house paper for Metropolitan Tories.

How to buy an MP.

Murdoch bought Mensch directly out of her committee.
Now every respecting paper owner will want one.

Question for this forum - which one would best suit Rothermere?

I'll starrt with David Davis MP (East Yorks).
Who can find a better match?

Marina Hyde wrote:As for Lebedev, no appointment by him could really be regarded as eyebrow-raising – particularly when you’re as Botoxed as the nine circles of his friendship inferno are. A starfucker of thermonuclear pretensions, Lebedev is marginally more likely to dip-dye his horse’s mane for a W magazine feature than he is to appoint it features editor. But only marginally.
