A lot of people feel a bit more Christian at Christmas, at least a bit warm and fuzzy and inclined to caring - that's caring as in watching a news report and going "ooh, what a shame", rather than giving absolutely no shits at all.
Christians do get persecuted. Worst offender is probably China, but let's just leave that. The reaction he's hoping to get is not picketing the Chinese embassy, but slumping a little further into the sofa and moaning that you can't sing baa baa black sheep any more.
For a lot of people, Christianity is not so much about God, or a moral code, but shorthand for mainstream white anglospheric life.
