Lots of social justice policy is already devolved. A case can certainly be made that the SNP don't use their existing powers. Wouldn't it be a better idea to oppose competently in the Scottish Parliament rather than stick up a UK bureaucracy that takes the heat of the SNP?

The key difference between this and the Tories' usual brand (“We’ve had a situation where children are, have been going hungry under a Labour government for years", anyone?) is that normally, their policies have been hurting those Other people, over there. The old, the disabled, the infirm, the foreigners - the ones either not equipped to defend themselves or just too busy surviving to do it.

This might actually affect people Tory voters know - especially in the former Red Wall - and know well enough that they can't delude themselves that enough of the people affected deserve it.
