A central plank of the government’s commitment to overhaul the criminal justice system has been postponed by the new justice secretary, Liz Truss, amid concerns that it would be seen as too soft on offenders.
Emphasis added.

"Of course people want a punishment element [to the criminal justice system]. A lot of people want that more than anything else. More than not having any crime, for example."

Such as the pointless war on drugs. A few weeks ago the DM was whining about the Home Office spending a mere £30,000 of the annual £16billion cost to attend a foreign conference about drug trafficking.

I remember watching an edition of panorama where Gove visited Texas and was amazed to discover that in Texas they're closing down prisons and are focusing on rehab and reform.

Liz Truss puts prison reform bill on hold

Justice secretary refuses to guarantee that Gove’s bill, which was at heart of Cameron’s last Queen’s speech, will go ahead

“It is a bit difficult to say at this early stage. I want to lay out a plan. The pace of what is happening on the ground will not slow. The key thing is that it has to be deliverable and we have to do things in the right order. That is what I am looking at,” said Truss.

“I am working on a delivery plan at the moment, which we do not currently have,” she said.
The rest of Truss's guff leads me to think that she might not be fully on top of her ministerial responsibilities.

There was a chap from the Prison Officers' Association trying - quite eloquently, at that - to point that out on BBC Breakfast this morning. He didn't get a lot of traction, but the hosts had less to throw at him to derail him than most guests.

As a former member of the POA, I can assure you that Truss is completely out of her depth and totally unsuitable for the position she holds. Her performance on BBC News was risible. I would have said laughable, but lives will probably be lost if her ridiculous policies continue.

Ever got the feeling that you've just answered your own question?

It's like why put Gove in charge of education, why put Hunt in charge of the NHS?

You're all being too harsh on Ms. Truss.
