Emily Thornberry accuses Chuka Umunna of virtue signalling on EU vote

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... on-eu-vote" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Emily Thornberry accused Chuka Umunna and other Labour Brexit rebels of “virtue signalling”, and fighting “faux battles” after three of the party’s frontbenchers were sacked for voting with his amendment.

The shadow foreign secretary said the rebels’ approach had unnecessarily exposed Labour divisions at a time when the party should be presenting itself as an alternative to Theresa May’s minority government.

“I don’t really understand it: I think there’s a little bit of virtue-signalling,” she said. “Chuka and me really don’t have a great deal of difference between us, and I think what’s unfortunate about what happened yesterday was that at a time when we could be exposing the differences in the Tory party, it was felt appropriate to have a vote on the single market”.
I guess there's an irony of a hate pillar of UKIP using the language of the alt-right.

Quite a few of the new intake seemed to be happy to use Corbyn's name on their election stuff. Laura Pidcock, Chris Williamson (if he can be described as new) and Jared O'Mara spring to mind, but I'm sure there were plenty of others.

Lot's of grumbling today about the fact that Rebecca Long-Bailey stood in for Corbyn at PMQs earlier, even though Emily Thornberry (the usual stand-in) was present on the front bench the whole time. The suggestion being that Thornberry is receiving some form of punishment for her recent comments re a confirmatory referendum.

The likes of Thornberry and Starmer have been impressively loyal to Corbyn, especially in recent months. If either one of them were to quit in the coming weeks, then things could very quickly spiral out of control for Corbyn.

I'm not entirely clear how one can be "good at PMQs. It's Westminster punch and Judy which means fuck all.

Josef Corbyn.

Not when even your own mates tell you to do one
One idea being floated by Corbyn supporters, say sources, is that Thornberry should swap positions with the shadow home secretary, Diane Abbott, to help ensure that Thornberry is removed from direct involvement in strategy around Brexit. “They have been trying to do this for weeks, but Diane refuses to move,” said one senior MP.
You can rely on Corbyn to make all the wrong moves so he probably will sack ET.

It would actually be a smart move. Brexit puritans who aren't already voting Labour are unlikely to be put off by Abbott any more than they already are. Thornberry is vastly more suited to shadow Home Secretary. With her there and Keir Starmer at Brexit, we might even have a chance at some competent and consistent messaging.

Thornberry has just been on WATO being completely unequivocal in her support for Labour adopting advocacy of a second referendum and supporting and campaigning for the retention of the UK's membership of the EU.

She was asked if this was Jeremy Corbyn's view and had to construct a fudged response about Jeremy being a profoundly democratic leader who would consult and listen. It was put to her that some leadership was needed to take the party's position forward. She had to waffle some more. This won't do. Corbyn needs a rocket up his arse.

He's like a fucking glacier.
