I do enjoy the 'hit with a haddock' thread, but for 2018 I'd like to propose a topic to celebrate Labour MPs who are quietly doing good work.

First nomination: Karen Buck - Westminster North. Every election she's a top Tory target, with personal friends of Cameron selected for a plum central London constituency. Every election she survives, in a large part due to being an excellent constituency MP.

She's twice proposed legislation to ensure that private landlords supply habitable homes, and twice the Tories have filibustered it out. She's got a fresh Private Member's Bill coming this Friday and this time it looks like the government will back it.

Third time lucky? Who knows. But a bouquet for sheer effort.

What an excellent idea for a thread.

My nomination is a rather obvious one given the present circumstances, but nonetheless I'd like nominate Streatham's finest Chuka Umunna for fighting the good fight re Brexit. Hopefully he will continue to play a big role in Labour's future, even if his route to the leadership is probably now closed forever.

I am going to nominate Peterborough's MP Fiona Onasanya for this: since the citizens of the "Anonymous carbuncle off the A1" got rid of the repugnant Stewart Jackson this young woman has been going about her business actually doing some good for the people of Peterborough.

Examples from the local paper here:

That first one is/was, IMO, an absolute scandal.

Plus - sound on Europe.

A Portillo moment for Eastern region Labour. Especially pleased for Fiona who applied as a candidate for the regional mayor post but the powers that be rammed through a dull hack which I suspect they were playing safe with the white guy. An Asian councillor in Peterborough also had an excellent CV but didn't get a look in for the mayoral contest either.

And I understand that this time, it passed?

Really good work here from Chris Williamson, a five minute video explaining the Carillon deal, the failure of PFI, and why Labour won't support it going forward. The sort of thing you can share on FB etc to succinctly explain why this has happened and who's to blame.

The presentation is a bit pedestrian but that aside definitely the right way forward. Economist David McWilliams is a good example of this approach

Yeah it did actually put me in mind of those narrated drawing YT videos. I suppose they might take a bit longer to put together though unless you've got a cartoonist to hand. Again the advantage of the current Labour approach is speed at which an issue gets a video put out on it.

There's a website which does it called Videoscribe, we used it on a project at work recently. You can add your own logos / symbols etc but there's also a library of them to work with. You can do it just adding your own voiceover.
