The only immigrant group of any significant weight in Newcastle is Norwegians from the pre-oil era, and they were made so welcome that the Norwegian government still sends the city a Christmas tree every year. It's hardly in any danger of becoming an ISIS stronghold any time soon.

David Wearing

With the far-right movement planning a rally in Newcastle, we should reflect on how Muslims have been scapegoated by our press and politicians

Thank you, Newcastle.

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE – The German movement Pegida (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West) held its first demonstration in the UK today, countered by a coalition of religious leaders, politicians, trade unions, and locals that outnumbered Pegida’s supporters by at least five to one.

Paul Weston, chair of Liberty GB and a speaker at the Pegida rally, which was held in Newcastle’s Bigg Market, claimed that 300 people were in attendance to oppose what they perceived as the encroaching Islamisation of the United Kingdom.
