Not that surprised that a tankie ended up joining the Brexit Party.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... t-sherwood
Forty years ago, in the autumn of 1979, I was 20 years old and a new graduate from the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL). I was active in the Anti-Nazi League and the Socialist Workers party, joining demonstrations and picket lines and attending earnest meetings in dingy pubs. I’d just started my first job as a trainee journalist. I was living with my boyfriend on the notorious North Peckham estate in south London.

The boyfriend was also a member of the SWP and a dominant figure in PCL’s student union, first as the editor of the student paper, and then – twice – as president. Alaric Bamping had a reputation as a leftwing firebrand, leading sit-ins and protests and conducting long, fierce arguments with anyone who disagreed with him.

So how the hell, 40 years on, has he ended up as a parliamentary candidate for the Brexit party?

Isn't there precedent already in that 'party'?
I seem to recall a former member of this very forum who seemed a lot more predisposed towards Farage than towards most of his party's MPs. Different cheeks, same arse.

Well, that's done my depression a power of good

If any Tory says to me "but this country was worse in 1978/9 under Labour", I swear I will not be held accountable for my actions.

I never thought I would find myself living in a failed state. My only consolation is that three people I held dear are no longer here to see it.

There's probably a decent chance that things are going to slide to "winter of discontent" levels. What's going to be different is whilst the press is still something of a right wing monolith, there's a whole new slew of media that's much less ideologically consistent.

My money is on the Mail et al giving it the "Keep Calm and Carry On" schtick. A lot of "inspiring" fluff and chat about the life cleansing powers of this enforced asceticism. Life is just better now it's simpler, isn't this what we all really wanted? We didn't need or want those imports, the cultural exchange, the modern comforts.

From Trot to Rightwing idealogue is a well trod path.
It's almost as through some folks get off on authoritarianism.

Exchanging one cult with another.

Suggests that belonging to a cult is the key charcteristic, not the nature of the cult or its orientation.

Prediction of local news on day one.

Village fete. Old dears. Cupcakes. Awful jazz band in boaters and stripy waistcoats. Bunting. Keep calm and carry on. Effervescent jolly black woman. Nutter in union Jack suit.

We don't have cupcakes, we have fairy cakes. Because we're English.
