Yet more on Cindy Hyde-Smith. Revisionist history all the way:
As a state senator in 2007, Hyde-Smith cosponsored a resolution that honored then-92-year-old Effie Lucille Nicholson Pharr, calling her "the last known living 'Real Daughter' of the Confederacy living in Mississippi." Pharr's father had been a Confederate soldier in Robert E. Lee's army in the Civil War.

The resolution refers to the Civil War as "The War Between the States." It says her father "fought to defend his homeland and contributed to the rebuilding of the country." It says that with "great pride," Mississippi lawmakers "join the Sons of Confederate Veterans" to honor Pharr.

The measure "rests on an odd combination of perpetuating both the Confederate legacy and the idea that this was not really in conflict with being a good citizen of the nation," said Nina Silber, the president of the Society of Civil War Historians and a Boston University history professor.

"I also think it's curious that this resolution -- which ostensibly is about honoring the 'daughter' -- really seems to be an excuse to glorify the Confederate cause," Silber said.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, according to the group's website, is a "historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved." The group says on its website that "The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the Second American Revolution."
And yet, she won. No doubt helped by POTUS tweeting to his supporters in her state to look at the (black) Democrat candidate, and ask themselves if he'd really "fit in" there.

There's a lot of material out there about the "Lost cause of the South" myth, the Daughters of Confederate Veterans and other such revisionism. It's definitely worth familiarising oneself with it for context on the like of these fucking eejits.

Hyde-Smith is the gift that keeps on giving:
In a 2012 incident when she was commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, a lesbian couple was told that they couldn’t hold a commitment ceremony at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum, even though straight couples could get married there.

With the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center, the women wrote a letter of complaint and then were allowed to have the commitment ceremony there.

This didn’t sit well with Hyde-Smith, who “strongly objected” to the ceremony and asked that state law change to provide “clear and straightforward definitions about what activities can take place on the property owned by the State of Mississippi.”

“While this same-sex couple’s request for a permit to utilize one of our state’s facilities for a ‘commitment ceremony’ is not being defined as a marriage ceremony, it is personally troubling for me,” she said at the time, citing her “personal and religious beliefs.”

The Jeffrey Epstein case. That one fairly disappeared.

Excellent work on it here: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/ ... 97825.html

Hard going and a long read, but heavens above. If you have the cash, you can do whatever you like in 'murrica. And Prince Andrew is still best buddies with him...

* "Dangerous Faggot" was the name of one of his speaking tours, so not libel your honour.

I nearly left this in another thread, but the bromide had kicked in...

Labour isn't the major rising costs for US car firms but the inflated price of steel thanks to Trump's 'America First' tariffs. I guess Cenk didn't mention that as Bernie Sanders flirted with similar economic protectionist mumbo-jumbo as Trump.

Yes Tim I'm sure that's what caused Milo to end up massively in debt.

Meanwhile in Michigan

https://www.metrotimes.com/news-hits/ar ... oming-dems
Michigan voters in November elected by solid margins a Democratic governor, attorney general, and secretary of state, all of whom take office in January.

In a normal democracy, that would mean a smooth transition from one party to the other. But this is America in 2018, so it's no surprise that Republicans are now trying to strip power from the incoming Dems.

The GOP is attempting to do so with two bills introduced Thursday in a lame duck legislative session that would weaken Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General-elect Dana Nessel.

Legislation from Republican Rep. Rob VerHeulen would strip Benson of her authority over campaign finance laws. Benson campaigned on a promise to crack down on dark money contributions from the wealthy, corporations, and others.

Cant the incoming legislature repeal those bills on day one?
The thing is there is no incoming legislature. The Republicans will still be in control come January.
