The German government's anti-Semitism commissioner has urged Jews to avoid wearing skullcaps in public.

Felix Klein warned Jews against donning the kippa in parts of the country following a rise in anti-Semitism.

He said his opinion on the matter had "changed compared with what it used to be".

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin said the recommendation amounted to "an admittance that, again, Jews are not safe on German soil".

A sharp increase in the number of anti-Semitic offences was recorded by the German government last year.

I simply couldn't be arsed with Wall 30 commemorations this evening. I was there at the 20th (cheap beer and sausage) and also at the 25th (beer and sausage, and a sprained ankle) and the novelty has worn off.

One the one hand, it is an undiluted good that this horrific beast is slain and ground in to the dust of history, but the dividend, an entirely separate entity, seems to have pulled up short on its promises. We have rocketing inequality, rampant gentrification, an arts sector that is barely breathing and the rapid erosion of all that set us apart from the rest of the easyJet schedule.

The differences between now and pre-1989 are palpable, of course they are, but there is no escaping the feeling of having sleepwalked in to another form of tyranny which puts one ideology - capitalism - on a pedestal to the detriment of everything else.

R4 PM revisited a debate that’s been conveniently forgotten with East Germans sceptical about instant unification for economic reasons and the damage it would inflict on their society. The guests felt the reality of gutting communities by trying to integrate such disparate economies vindicated them.
