Hard to remove the mental taint of a Brexiter saying it should all burn, or an atheist pleased to see a monument to religion destroyed though.

Christ, I wish I had some proper sleeping tablets.
Yes. Like flies to shite the Brexiteers cometh...

Don't they claim to be acting in the best interests of Western culture, or was that just some other shit I saw on the side of a bus?

Let me guess: wailing about Western values being eroded somewhere somehow and then undermining said values with ignorance, irrationality, hatred, fearmongering, self obsession and utter conceit?

The West Ham fans forum I occasionally browse reckon Macron has had it torched deliberately to force the UK into staying in the EU so hard-working ENGLISH taxpayers personally pay for it's reconstruction.

I'd have immediately cited it as a poe were it not for their other unsavoury opinions about Shamima Begum providing evidence that they really are just that deranged...

Anyway, incredibly awful and sad news. Oblomova was distraught all evening, she spent 2 years living not far from Notre Dame and her memories of her time in Paris have the cathedral dominate the skyline. I would feel much the same if Bath Abbey similarly burnt down (though of course it was nowhere near as grand as Notre Dame and I'm very sad that I never got to see the rose windows :( )

Fascinating thread on how Paris has been preparing for something like this for over a century and a half...

"JET FUEL CAN'T MELT STEEL BEAMS"

Um...OK...

"FIRE DOESN'T BURN OLD, DRY WOOD"

Piers, why are your eyes doing that thing?

"WATER ISN'T REALLY WET, IT JUST WANTS YOU TO THINK IT IS"

Can someone help him?

Loved that - especially the way these two shots went together...

Unsurprisingly the Mail's default position is to immediately start trying to blame people, notably the fire service. This morning one of the first articles I saw at the top of their page was the usual "WHERE WERE THE FIRE BRIGADE? WHY DID THEY TAKE SO LONG?!?!!!111"

That seems to have been slapped down so they've replaced it with:

Did firefighters follow 18th Century emergency protocol to save Notre Dame? Theory emerges that fire crew knew to save people, then art - because the cathedral could be rebuilt
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... -Dame.html

They've also found a person to set their sights on - extra points for the fact he's young:

Anyway, fuck 'em. Those of us who've been lucky enough to visit this beautiful structure can only hope to see it restored to its former glory asap.

Amen!

Bad as the damage is I think we must conclude that Notre Dame dodged a bullet last night. There was a point where I feared we'd wake up to a pile of rubble this morning. Cheered me up no end to see the old lady still standing.
