He didn't actually want to fight Britain, his real aim was Central/Eastern Europe, based on a geopolitics theory by, I think, Mackinder. This said that the world was, basically one large land mass, Europe, Asia and Africa (curiously, he disregarded the American continent) and that the central bit of this, Eastern Europe/Western Asia was the heartland and important, it was surrounded by less important rimlands. He who dominates the heartland, dominates the world.

In Hitlers view, he saw a large German Reich surrounded by neutral, less important Western European countries, which would be on side. Italy, Spain and Portugal already had Fascist governments and there were Fascist, or semi Fascist, Nazi or semi Nazi parties in existence in most other countries.

Japan, an ally, would dominate the far east, leaving Britain, via the Empire and Commonwealth, who he wanted neutral, to dominate the parts of the world he wasn't interested in, like Australia, India, The West Indes etc

He assumed Britain could be negotiated out of the way, and he disregarded the USA, which he saw as corrupt and associated it with gangsters and Mickey Mouse etc

Britain upset this plan by going to war over Poland in 1939, and he always seemed a bit half hearted about the plan to invade, operation Sea Lion. He seemed to lose interest in Britain after the Blitz and turned East to his real aim, The Soviet Union.

A curious sting operation against the leader of the Austrian far right hasn’t just plunged the central European nation into a political crisis: Days before the European Parliament election, it has wreaked havoc on the continent’s nationalist right.

On Friday, Der Spiegel and Sueddeutsche Zeitung published reports about a six-hour conversation Heinz-Christian Strache, leader of Austria’s Freedom Party (FPOe), and his close ally Johann Gudenus had on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza with a woman posing as the niece of Russian oil and gas billionaire Igor Makarov. Every word was recorded, and the Austrian politicians can be seen on video discussing the possibility of the Russian woman investing in Austria’s dominant tabloid newspaper to push a far-right agenda, options for an illegal donation to FPOe through a special purpose vehicle — and a quid pro quo in the form of Austrian government contracts for the Russian. The whole thing was a set-up, and whoever organized it declined to disclose their motives when they shared the video with the two German publications.

Austrian General Election today after the fallout of "Ibizagate" and the OVP (Peoples Party) leader Sebastian Kruz looks like he'll remain being Chancellor after securing a 37% share of the vote, up 6% from the previous election in 2017 - he's clearly eased through the fall out from the scandal.

Also a good night for the Greens, whom went from being wiped out in the last election scoring 3.8% of votes, to 14.3% this time. The Liberal NEOS also had a modest increase in their share of the vote from 5.3% to 7.4%.

Biggest loser of the night was the FPO (Freedom Party), the OVP's junior coalition partner and all-round arseholes, whom went down from 26% in 2017 to 17.3%. It wasn't a good night either for the SPO (Social Democrats) whose vote share went down from 26.9% to 21.5% - its worst result since World War II. The result has also eliminated JEZTZ (a Green Party splinter party) from the National Council, getting 1.9% compared to 4.4% previously.

In theory, Kruz could go back into coalition with the FPO, but this doesn't look likely. The SPO have ruled out going into a Grand Coalition, leaving a possibility of a multiparty coalition with the Greens & NEOS. Coalition talks are expected to take a few weeks.
