The problem for Bejing’s hardline regime is that China has a massive educated urban population like Hong Kong who tasted a more liberal society in the 90s. A blood bath in Hong Kong may send a clearer message to others than concessions.

Agreed. Even with the world watching, I suspect that any government response to this is going to make Tiananmen Square look like a teddy bears' picnic.
