How little Brexiters understand or have bothered to learn about EU and international trade is unfathomable to imagine as Stephen Hawking's brilliance. 'We'll be free to trade with the rest of the world when we come out of this protectionist racket' comes from a particular demographic; Men who haven't been to a supermarket for 45 years because that's the wife's job.
maybe Conservative-led governments could have put a bit more energy into opening up the less open EU economies

Cameron and his MEPs were active on the EU patent and trying to expand the definition of a services market which had unwanted repercussions to national labour standards. Sovereignty didn't seem to be a problem for the Tories on that one.
