And, plucked form a rabbit like a top hat, the airwaves are alight with the Government's new campaign against social media.

They say they wish to prevent "extremists" using it as a place to do extremist stuff.
It's pretty clear that their version of "extremists" has a heavy bias toward forrins and darkies.
Barmy Kippers, alt-right civil-war cheerleaders or Britain first are not mentioned.

OK so what's so bad about this?
Surely it's long overdue for the government to be strong and be seen to be doing something.

Here's what's wrong.

* We have the govt jumping into line after one bizarre headline from one of our least reliable newspapers. A sign of how interdependent the Tory right and the print media have become.

* It's the usual vague "policy by innuendo" - nice soundbytes, but you can be sure that the likes of Hopkins, Farage or Watson will continue their missions unaffected.
The usual suspects of the caliphates are overseas, so immune to UK law (as are the social media platforms).
The only folks likely to be swept up by this are a few secondary school fanboys with poor judgement - but that's OK - any collar will do as long as we're "doing something".

* "Policy by innuendo" part two. Ministers jumping into line at one extremist scare, sounds all too like so much alt-right inspired bullshit.
"Sweden is lost", remember that - just a fortnight old. "We're all cowed" - no It's just you Katie; cowed, in your big house in Devon.

* It's all a fine distraction - ill defined goals that get the usual concerned citizens upset about ordinary stuff.
Melanie Phillips must be spinning in her Times column - frustrated that the payoff didn't arrive while she was the leading Glenda of the right.

We had Trevor Kavanagh on this morning giving his expertise of terrorism on the wide world interweb. He sounded like your dad ranting at the evils of punk rock

As well as two ministers who can't think of anything else to say or do but its better than nothing. Now the Mail will be on a roll; close our cyber borders now!
Foreign minister Boris Johnson has blasted “disgusting” internet companies such as Google for making money from extremist content.

Mr Johnson told the The Sunday Times that Google needs to “stop just making money out of prurient violent material.”

“I’m furious about it,” he said, referring to firms’ slow reaction to take down terrorist propaganda and training manuals. “It’s disgusting.”

Home secretary Amber Rudd also wrote in the Telegraph that tech firms must do more following the terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge and Parliament, which killed four people, including a police officer, and injured a dozen more.

“Each attack confirms again the role that the internet is playing in serving as a conduit, inciting and inspiring violence, and spreading extremist ideology of all kinds,” she said.

“But we can’t do it by ourselves. We need the help of social media companies, the Googles, the Twitters, the Facebooks of this world. And the smaller ones, too: platforms such as Telegram, Wordpress and Justpaste.it.”

Tim Berners-Lee raised a good point about cryptography in here:

Maybe the next time some insufferable idiot brings up the old "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" nonsense, ask them if that includes their credit card details.
