Regarding the retreat form reason, I'm more worried by its growth here.
There are enclaves where it thriving.
Usually where leaders have found that monetising a "movement" is a lot better than working.

Debate, as a discipline, isn't actually about being correct, but about being convincing and appealling. Facts are a sideshow. That's why alt-right intellectuals (and I use that word quite, quite wrongly) are so very fond of calling for public debates with liberal figures. Like creationists et al before them, they've recognised they can't win with the mind, so they're trying for the gut.
Aye, I should have clarified that. Debate as a sport is actually much more how they treat it. But I think for most people the idea of a 'debate' is not the formality and process and the win so much as the end-result being a better relationship, or clearer understanding, or resolved tension. Most people don't care about rhetoric, they care about the issue.
