I am reading a 50+ year litany of under-achievers and mediocrity. Welcome to 2020.

Frank Maguire (Independent Irish Republican - though wasn't an abstentionist)
Bobby Sands (Yes, him - Anti H-Block)
Owen Carron (Anti H-Block/Proxy Political Prisoner - became an MP after the Thatcher government put the kibosh on plans by Republican hunger strikers in the Maze/Long Kesh to keep fielding a new candidate among themselves for every by-election when one of their elected own died)
William McCrea (DUP)
William Thompson (UUP)
Pat Doherty (Sinn Fein)
Barry McElduff (Sinn Fein - he of "loaf of Kingsmill bread on the head" fame a couple of years back)
Orfhlaith Begley (Sinn Fein, present incumbent)

So from the controversial to the rancid to the meaningless.

Are you ready for my first name? Sure??

Robert Kilroy-Silk (Knowsley North) 83-86 (I was a kid at the time). Yes. Him.The political version of Jimmy Hill. The bastard who started it all off. And we all know what "it" is.

George Howarth (Knowsley North) 86-97. George has been MP in Knowsley North forever, and there's less chance of him being ousted than there is of a day without Piers Morgan being a cunt. George has been resident at the House of Commons for so long that there are unsubstantiated reports that he once challenged Robert Walpole to a duel on Tower Bridge for nicking the last of the pork scratchings in the House of Commons bar.

Jane Kennedy (Wavertree). 97-99 Don't remember much about her. Just recall 1997 I was happy that the Tories 18 year rule was over. To put it mildly.

Peter Kilfoyle (Walton) 00-10
A man ahead of his time. Opposed the second Gulf war. Held the opinion Labour ignored its heartland. Sadly came true two months ago.

Steve Rotherham (Walton)10-17

Campaigned for, and was integral, in the release of the Hillsborough papers. When "normal," people make it to Parliament they can bring it crashing down. Cameron can stick his apology up his arse. The rest of the UK came to the conclusion that there had been a cover up of shocking proportions two decades earlier and didn't need an official report to confirm it.

Dan Carden (Walton) 17---

Dan's not the man for me so far. Corbyn yes man. Liverpool voted to remain yet Dan defied this constantly by voting whatever Jez told him to.

The Labour representation is a bit misleading as Meriden had very different constituency boundaries back in the '70's. Labour only missed out in 1997 by a few hundred votes, though.

Edit: Christ almighty, I've only just realised that Christine Shawcroft was the Labour candidate in 2001

Sir Ian Gilmour - baronet with a bit of a conscience
William Waldegrave - another landed, titled nob but with a bit of a conscience
Dr Mark Hughes - alcoholic and disillusioned
Colin Moynihan - short and useless
Cheryl Gillan - useless, long outstayed welcome
John Bercow - enough said!
David Liddington - grim but not the worst of the recent era of Tories
New Aylesbury MP - no idea who he (for it is a he) actually is

All Tories bar one! None has ever received my vote!

Really? I don't know anything about him, I probably wasn't paying much attention to politics when I was two.
Of course, nothing you could do about it but he was an unpleasant piece of work

He was the MP for just two years from 1964 to 1966 but was accused by the then Labour prime minister Harold Wilson of having run an 'utterly squalid' campaign.
Mr Griffiths always denied saying 'if you want a n***** for a neighbour, vote Labour' but it followed him around for the rest of his career.
The Tories lost Smethwick in 1966 but Mr Griffiths went on to become MP for Portsmouth North in 1979 until the landslide Labour victory of 1997.
His controversial election in Smethwick came as the issue of immigration in the 1960s had driven a wedge between workers in the town and the then Labour MP, Patrick Gordon Walker.
Home-made placards using the slogan were made by people supporting Mr Griffiths, although he said he had nothing to do with them.
He was criticised for not condemning the placards and for saying: "I should think that is a manifestation of the popular feeling. I would not condemn anyone who said that. I would say that is how people see the situation in Smethwick. I fully understand the feelings of the people that say it. I would say it is exasperation, not fascism."

Griffiths'leaflet avoided the word "nigger" but I do not doubt for a moment that he deployed the slogan verbally throughout the campaign. Lord knows the bloody leaflet was bad enough.
