Dober dan vsem,

After a couple of days of rest, we were back on the road again yesterday. Stunning morning drive through the alps for a breakfast Burke, then we dropped down into Ljubljana to to potter about admiring the canal and castle before luncheon. The things those Slovenes can do with truffles will amaze you!

Then another scenic sojourn down to Trieste to be wowed by one if only 2 squares in all of Europe that open onto the seafront, before picking up a haul of the finest gelato in the region (don’t even waste anyone’s time trying to dispute that). Back in time for a quick beachside spritz and another pizza (three cheese blend with salami and pistachio drizzle).

We crossed 3 borders today and didn’t need to do anything other than buy a sticker for the car windshield at one of the comfort stops. Back in the day that crossing would have taken 4 hours. How far the interconnection of Europe has come (and the enormity of our folly for throwing it away).

Morning all.

Stayed more local these days. Beach and aqua park yesterday with a passable paella in the evening. Only major blight so far has been the German family we dined next to yestereve, with the patriarch impatiently tapping his watch and yelling because they didn’t bring his beer with satisfactory haste. We left an extra tip because of him.

That's some weird-ass Kraut. Waiting for a beer is a rite of passage, albeit a small one. It means that the beer has been poured correctly and paid due respect.

Sure it wasn't a Tiroler?

Afraid not as I need to google what that is.

Had another German group next to us tonight, four lads clicking their fingers to summon the serving staff. Must be because where we’re staying has a reputation of being so cheap that a janitor could afford a holiday here but another sour taste left in my mouth.

Still, it’s nice to not be the most loathed nationality in the post code. And my grilled sea bass was excellent 8)

Depressing. They wouldn't dare do it at home.

I remember an Italian tourism minister (or similar) about 18 or so years ago, calling for a ban of all-male English and German groups. Nasty bit of Lega Nord work, he was, but heunderlined the stopped clock theory.

Buon pomeriggio amici!

Was meant to be in the middle of a monsoon here but Providence (and strong sea winds) has seen to blow the rain clouds over a city in the next province. Result, blazing sunshine and an empty beach :D just hope this local game doesn’t blow my rather spiffing new Slovenian football shirt all the way back to Ljubljana

Uh oh, that spells trouble. A football shirt in that neck or the woods usually means that you're either a fascist or about to be set upon by them.

We had a debate on here a few years back and generally agreed that lightweight linen or silk are most appropriate for the Gentleman Mailwatcher.

Storm arrived last night and with some gusto. Fortunately we’d already scoffed our supper and could enjoy the lightning show from the balcony (until the thunderclaps became audible, then I decided to retreat inside).

Annoyingly it’s lingered to this morning and we’re meant to be driving our pal back to the train station today, and then journeying into Padua ourselves. Hope the conditions have warmed every other bugger away from the Autostrada.
