From a friend of a friend on the Fleecebook. Very eloquent, I thought.
The Russia Report is shocking. Why is it that so many I talk to still have no idea? No idea that this report existed. No idea that it was hidden and delayed and subject to a failed attempt by No 10 to further delay and obscure its findings. No idea that it was finally published yesterday. And no interest in what it contained.

How do people whose knowledge or interest or awareness fits any of those descriptions then dare to hold an opinion on what patriotism to the UK looks like?

The contents are shocking. They reveal that over a period of six years and three Prime Ministers, no attempt has been made to protect the country from malicious Russian interference. They knew the interference was there but they refused to look because to look would expose evidence against themselves. As the saying goes, let that sink in. Our elected Government failed, in what is surely one of its defining responsibilities, even to acknowledge, never mind investigate, aggressive foreign activities intended to weaken and destabilise our country. What does the word treason even mean if this is OK?

It also draws our attention to the fact that The Conservative Party itself and individuals therein are answerable to Russia in return for financial support.

It highlights the spread of disinformation from Russia which has been allowed to continue unchecked. The Report points out that it doesn’t even need to be believable misinformation. It simply muddies the waters. It gets us to the point where we all give up and conclude that you can’t trust anyone or anything so our personal opinion is as valid as anyone else’s, even and especially on complex matters such as trade deals or foreign policy. It makes us utterly vulnerable to liars and conmen.

Conmen who might, for example, persuade us to put our entire economic, social and philosophical framework in the bin (EU membership) while having nothing with which to replace it. Nothing. See today’s news - the Government is giving up hope of reaching a Deal with the EU on the same day it admits it’s also given up on getting a deal with the US. Who sold us this crap that it would work out fine? Johnson, Gove, Farage. That’s who. They are liars. Liars who have become very powerful and wealthy off our money by lying to us.

When can we admit the traitors were not the people who opposed Brexit but the perpetrators? When will we understand that our media is, in the main, unfit for purpose and has aided and abetted our own downfall? When will we recognise that our so-called democratic framework which was always fragile has been damaged and abused beyond breaking point? When will we call out those lily-livered MPs who, trotting around as show-ponies in a rosette but with no independent thought or application of conscience, have enabled a coup inside the country and sold our national heritage for a handful of dirty roubles?

And yes, I know the only people who read this far already understand. *screams into the void*

They've convinced a whole swathe of working-class voters that aristocrats and spivs are on their side and the neutral arms of the state are against them. By comparison, convincing them that a report written by experts is nothing to worry about is a piece of piss.

And patriotism becomes an opportunity to smack a foreigner in the face. "The country's a shithole but we're still 'ard!".

We all know the press would sink Labour as a party not to be trusted on security and patriotism if this happened under their watch when the USSR was still an entity. Putin is even more of a menace as the Cold War bought tit for tat proportionality; a spy for a spy, a proxy war for a proxy war. Assassination of opponents on foreign soil was rare (Bulgaria's umbrella murder of Markov for eg) due to the predictability of the response. But Putin doesn't give a toss.

So how does Labour keep this one going to make Johnson look like a down market Profumo and/or Kim Philby by the end of the year? As you can be sure Murdoch et al would have done successfully against a Labour leader.
