I'm getting the hang of the new board now. It's nice.

I'll just make a shameless bid here to be the first person to mention BUMSEX on the new board.

It looks very impressive - what software is the forum running on now? Have to say, phpBB 3 was beginning to look very dated, but I know it has its fans. A forum I mod runs under an extension of WordPress and that too looks good.

Does this also mean the private sections are now truly private?
The forum is still on phpBB but Timbo found a cool skin which I have hacked to hell and back, and applied the latest updates. We needed to move fairly briskly once we got the nod so we were reluctant to try to port the db across to anything else. Hence, staying with phpBB even if it is still not blisteringly quick.

That said, once we tweak the new server, we should be able to wring a few more milliseconds' performance out of it.

The private sections are still being indexed but that too should be resolved in the fullness of time. In fact, there are quite a few tasks to backfill which is because we were trying to limit the downtime to the absolute minimum.

Tweet embedding now works, too. Just paste the Twitter link and it converts it automatically to an embedded item. Same for YouTube videos, Twitch streams and Facebook videos.

To demonstrate:

I'm just seeing a link that reads "Loading tweet" - not a deal-breaker as I can right-click on it to view in new tab or window.

You aren't using anything to block scripts, like NoScript?

I found that it comes up with "Loading tweet" unless I cleared mailwatch.co.uk in NoScript to be trusted.

Adblocker in Firefox? Not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to tech.
Might do that, though no adblocker I have is doing the deed.
If you don't know what NoScript is, it's very likely you haven't it installed.

Edit: Try whitelisting this site in your ad blocker?

I appreciate that they may seem a little odd and superfluous, but there was at least a dollop of logic behind deploying them. The new site is going to be significantly better Google optimised, and the sign-up process improved, meaning that hopefully we should be starting to re-grow our user base a bit after years of steady attrition.

The badges are intended as a means for new users to distinguish who the longer-standing members are once we start getting some more fresh faces through the door. It's not intended as a patronising reward, more as a signal that you've managed to make it x-number of years and/or x-number of posts without being banned. If it doesn't work out that way, and they are just a pain in the arse, we can always disable the feature with no harm done.
