That entire report is spun out of one tweet from some demented passenger who seems to have been under the impression that BA only has one pilot flying 747s and couldn't cope with the fact that he wasn't in the cabin when all the plane was doing was taxiing. Yet they describe it as a "drama". If the Mail's intrepid reporter found that dramatic, goodness know what adjectives he'd reach for for a real crisis.

Am presuming the other two pilots had it covered - sadly said demented passenger presumably imagines there is still a radio operator, navigator and bomb aimer required.

I suspect the passenger can look forward to a lifetime of downgrades, missing hot meals and spilt drinks for the rest of her BA career.

I experienced landings at Madeira airport three times back in the 80s. It was like something from The Dambusters as the plane zips low over the sea towards the island then, at the last moment, does a 90º turn and you're running alongside the local's houses. There's lots of left-a-bit, right-a-bit, hold-her-steady-Captain and then you're landing on a strip barely long enough for Cessna. Richard Todd throws his weight on the brakes and it skids along the concrete. On every landing the locals on the plane would burst into spontaneous applause and loadsa Hail Marys.

At the time the runway wasn't long enough for a take-off with a full fuel load so going home was always via Faro.
