It's not about sci-fi...

Star Trek references presumably constitute Sci Fi, do they not?

MAM, read the link I provided to the response to @Cyclist - that will explain why Malc provided the example he did and why I asked @Andy McDandy to explain it for those who've not seen the film he mentioned.

Let's get into language which we understand then. Littlejohn is a twat. Nuff said.

No. It's a comment about the allegorical use of language, using allegory, and using the specific allegories that refer to not understanding because of insufficient shared contextual experience and to explaining that said allegory was the answer.

The word 'boat' appears in Moby Dick. That doesn't mean that all boats are linked to whales.

Again, not the point that was being made.

If you've not seen the Martin Scorsese classic, "Casino", it charts the rise and fall of a casino manager in 1970s Las Vegas, and that of his gangster friend played by Joe Pesci.

At the start of the story, Pesci's character is a vicious and brutal gangster, quick to anger and capable of dropping an enemy in one well aimed punch. By the end though, high living and complacency have taken their toll. He's overweight, addicted to drugs, and utterly burned out. He's so set in his routines that he doesn't realise how much information he's giving away to police listening in. He's so assured of his position that he doesn't realise how mad the mafia bosses are with him.

That's the parallel I was trying to make.

Andy - I was just ribbing you gently. I'm sorry not everyone got the point.

It's an excellent film and Pesci is very good in it. I understand the parallel between Littlejohn and the character you make, before the discussion veered off into obscurity

Not everyone has seen the film and not everyone understood the reference.

That was the point.

This is a classic example of why Shittlejhon is so popular - his references chime with his audience. They 'get' what he's saying straight away. He uses the lowest common denominator of "retro" popular culture. Everybody over a certain age is aware of Minder, The Sweeney, Dad's Army etc. No complicated explanations (which his readers probably wouldn't understand anyway) are necessary.

I've more to with life than be talked down to in a condescending manner. I am still unemployed, have the worry of putting food on the table, providing for a 12 year old in his first year at high school, last week I had to ask a friend for a bit to keep me going until the UC payment hit.

Anyway, I'm sure that the struggle of someone who has been working for 40 years and is now on the scrapheap is of no consequence to the chattering classes is it?

Fuck it, I'm off
