Thanks partly to its unionised labour market, the jobless rate for French men and women aged 20 to 24 has, incredibly, been at least 16 per cent over the past 30 years.

France’s pension system, meanwhile, is in chaos, with the state scheme forecast to slip more than £16 billion into the red by 2020.

Little wonder that even the European Commission has urged France to push through radical reforms to its labour market and pensions laws.

But that would mean taking on the public sector unions, and Mr Hollande shows no sign of wanting to grasp the nettle.
France actually has (and has long had) one of the lowest unionisation rates in Europe - it stands at less than 10 per cent.

The unions it does have are somewhat more militant than ours but really that's not saying much. They're not that powerful. As Sandbrook probably knows but is too dishonest to admit, Hollande is a classic example of what happens when you talk left in opposition and act right in office. Nobody does obnoxious (and unwarranted) chest-beating like British Tories.

The coming apocalypse: Last week, historian DOMINIC SANDBROOK wrote a damning critique of the West's failure to halt Islamic fanatics. Now, after a savage murder that confirmed his worst fears, he looks into the future
You can guess what's coming.

He forgot to mention the Triffid threat. Clever Dominic got a big star from his English teacher in the 1970s for his essay; Britain in the future. Instead of writing about rockets to Mars Dom went for a dystopian future of police in riot helmets checking our ID in the street as hyper inflation and shortages give way to civil disturbance. He just gets the essay out every few years for Mail readers and changes a few names. But they are essentially the same ; the future- fear fear fear.

Jesus he got payed for this garbage
And even though Britain has largely been spared the sectarian atrocities that have scarred cities such as Paris, Madrid and Amsterdam, there is no cause for complacency.
Not with militant Islamists controlling several Northern councils, and not after last summer’s appalling violence between pro-Caliphate demonstrators and members of the semi-criminal English Defence League.

From Glasgow to Barcelona, historian DOMINIC SANDBROOK fears Europe is returning to the crude nationalism that caused such misery
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic ... z3Dtm1X2ij" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Yes thats right the Daily Mail warns its readers of the dangers of the poison of nationalism. As the resident big thinking historian he looks at the European wide implications which of course the Mail plays no part in trying to stir up such feelings. After reading this you can enjoy a daily diet of Hitchens, Heffer and Letts's insights into how the downtrodden English yeoman must rise up and make a stand against the money grabbing Scots and assorted foreigners in Brussels who only spend their days thinking about to take away their liberties.

The comments section shows readers have a blurry grip on this subject.

Yes of course, nationalism is for excitable foreigners as readers point out
David, Norwich, Portugal,
UK is a Kingdom not a Nation.

Sally, Birmingham, United Kingdom,
The comparison of the SNP to UKIP is wrong. UKIP has the words united kingdom in it & that means together & united as one nation. UKIP only want independence from the undemocratic EU.
I was taken to task by an SNP friend last week for calling the SNP nationalist, they were merely seeking independence.

Dominic Sandbrook noted an idea down that Britain's creative talent aren't really rebels but an international business (no shit daddy O!) and has got a documentary series on the back on of it; Let us entertain you (BBC2). Sandbrook has culled some well-worn anecdotes from BBC4 music documentaries that aren't overt cultural histories but still more informative on the subject.

His thesis is something along the lines of Britain is a declining industrial economy but has employed the same entrepreneurial spirit as the Victorians in selling its day dreams and stories to the world.

The programme opened with a wrongly told anecdote about Tony Iommi losing his finger tips in a sheet metal factory but still persevered with his dream; 1970s Birmingham the now declining workshop of the world-sheet metal factory- heavy metal music- popular globally. This could be a fascinating subject if it wasn't in the hands of a hack like Sandbrook.

The Django Reinhardt angle in that story would be too Euro Friendly for Sandbroolk.

Mailites pining for Nazi Germany and making ludicrous comparisons with the European Union.

SS-GB 2017: The BBC's drama shows what 1940s Britain would have been like if Hitler had won. But what if the Nazis were still ruling the world today? A top historian gives a chilling insight

I know Europe would not have the immigrant problems it currently has.

But Germany did win. They conquered all of Europe and called it the EU. Without firing a shot.

Might have been better to have let them win than to just hand our country over now to an even more alien culture. One with no shared history and a very strict element within it.

I can answer the headline question: There'd be NO ISIS, NO STATE SCROUNGERS, and the population of those opposed to the west today would be rather reduced.

There's one thing I think wouldn't have happened and that's all the migration from middle east etc...

1, I don't like Sandbrook at all. I think he is a smug, presumptious twat and I just find him very annoying.

2, Mail readers would fit into a Nazi Britain very well. Katie Hopkins would have found her true calling in life as a guard at some camp or other.

Cunts every single one of them

I also think that his theory about how the war would have panned out if Britain had been eliminated from it is wrong too. I think that the Russians would still have defeated the Germans at Stalingrad and, by about 1943, the Soviet Union was probably capable of beating the Germans on their own and occupying the whole of Europe.

The Germans never got very far with nuclear weapons, some of the scientists working on it were Jewish, which put the Nazis off the subject
