Maureen v the working class. Again.
When did Britain become so greedy, moaning and idle?
Ninety-year-old Bernard Jordan, a former RN officer, stole the show by AWOL-ing his wife and care home to reach France to recall D-Day.
Other old men, suits freshly-pressed, were held upright by their sons. Trembly and gnarled-fingered, some in tears.
Many memories too dark for airing even after 70 years.
But at what stage after WWII’s end did the British become the greedy, moaning, often idle and curmudgeonly race we see today?
It wouldn’t have been in the post-war generation, because this still enshrined the self-sacrificing ideals that led to the Normandy invasion.
But change we did. The beadier-eyed saw the potential to hoodwink the welfare state for use as milch cow.
Discipline went out of the window. The grandsons of the old gallants were now storming schools to punch teachers hoping to bring obedience to chaotic young lives.
The old men believed in supporting their families, honesty and work. And here are their modern descendants following in the footsteps of the types they despised as “spivs”, who cashed in on war.
Patriotism has become laughable, forelock-tugging to the House of Windsor one day, tax-fiddling the next.
Truly the last refuge of scoundrels.

We've got democracy! Who needs solidarity?
