"Romps, Tots and Boffins - the Strange Language of News" by Robert Hutton. Very funny and at times one wonders if the author has dropped in here.

30ft, my arse.

A mast is generally 4.2m in height and at only one, brief point could you possibly claim that the water is anywhere close to double mast-height. And, at that point, it is the churn and spray of the broken wave which has been augmented by the out-rushing water and the cross-off shore winds.

Speaking of those winds. I would be very surprised if they were even the top-end of a Bft 6. Those sails are easily a good 5m2 in size and not the 3.5 to 3.8m2 hankies that are required for wave-sailing in the blows that the mail are reporting and which are, in any case, the gusts of much lower mean speeds.

With the right kit, reasonable technical know-how and the required fitness, an 8 or 9 is perfectly sailable but sadly, not by me any longer.

Still. The facts would have made shite copy.

Out of print now, but the go-to book for that sort of stuff used to be the late Fritz Spiegl's " Keep Taking The Tabloids". He covers all the ground, from pouncing pigs to swooping coppers, how there are no ordinary binoculars to be had, only "powerful" ones, and how nobody ever just suffers a heart attack, it's always a "massive heart attack".

Recommended if you can find a copy. Looks like there are some cheapos available through Amazon:

.

I'm willing to bet that 30ft is the height the spray reaches as it bounces off a sea wall, and that's what they are calling the height of the wave.

All tots are tragic.
The SAS is always 'on standby'.
All cocktails are lethal.
Anywhere south of Portsmouth is sun-kissed.
All council estates are tough.

There's a lot of these. :D

According to that drawing either the wave is about 150 miles high or Britain is approx 300ft long. Either way, the Atlantic now seems to be off the east coast.

You'd need a running 18 to 20m swell to deliver that kind of face and that comfortably falls in to the "100-year wave" category. That's not to say that it's impossible but even Skerryvore has never seen anything that monstrous. The Squirrel is right when she points out that the spray might reach mighty heights but this tosser at The Express has simply thought of a scary number and doubled it.

As a headline, it is on a par with "Kerry Katona Reveals Everything" but the only twat you'll ever get a glimpse of is Nathan Rao.
