If the spiders don't get you, ...

It's just perverse now. I don't know if people at the Mail get some sort of thrill out of creating fear and panic but this is just plain weird. I know it generates clicks, but there seems to be more to this. I think they got off on scaring their readers.

That also happens with bee and wasp bites, which are much more common but attract absolutely none of this hysteria.

Massive headlines there about how she is
scarred for life
Paragraph 29, however:
Layla is only now recovering from the ordeal and will have a small dent in her knee
Also loads of references to people who "almost" lost limbs because of this scary monster. "Almost" is Mailese for "only in the fevered imagination of our reporter."

I strongly suspect that part of the motivation is that they hope to get clicks from ghoulish types wanting to look at the pictures.

Some of the more tabloidy papers do use the 'killer' descriptor (ok, it's mostly the Star)

(warning: gory pustules and graphic sadface picture)

They do kill insects though so if you were, in fact, a fly then you'd be justified in describing them as killers.

Well, with any luck you've diverted a few Mail reporters who have no doubt been scurrying around trying to build that up into tomorrow's big headline. If it's taken them away from persecuting some unfortunate benefit claimant you've performed a service to mankind.

This is a strange one. They seem to be, in a round about way, admitting they've been talking shit and scare mongering. Perhaps someone at the Mail has said enough is enough after realising just how much people are taking the piss out of them over this.
