In any industry where the potential rewards at the top of the tree are great enough (including but not limited to politics, journalism, fashion, showbiz, music, film etc), and there's no shortage of people lining up to work there - despite knowing what it's like - you're going to get bullying, intimidation, harassment, and work practices going over the line into illegal. And those who prosper will be those who can both take it and dish it out in equal measure.
It's like several said regarding #metoo and the Harvey Weinstein case, people know what's going on but trade off the chance of a shot at the big time as worth it for the shit they have to eat to get there.
"There ain't nothing you fear more than a bad headline, is there? You'd rather live in shit than let the world see you work a shovel."
