Has quit.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19146805
Conservative politician and novelist Louise Mensch is to stand down as an MP, the party has announced.

The MP for Corby is moving to New York with her three children to be with her husband of a year, Peter Mensch, who is manager of rock band Metallica.

Her decision to quit will trigger a by-election in the Northamptonshire constituency, a marginal seat.

Well, I never...

I wonder what the real reason is. It'll cut down on the rentaquote options for the right wing tabloids.

Good chance for Boris to prove he is popular even outside London!

It's a marginal, but he might think it's worth a punt. Whether or not the people of Corby will go for another time-waster is another matter.

Her complaints about her 'work-life balance' don't hold water - she still managed to find the time to set up that stupid bloody website with that tool Luke Bozier. Ditching your constituents after two years is pathetic, to be honest. I would imagine there'll be quite a few people who voted for her last time out who'll be pretty pissed off about it. Crucial by-election for Labour though.

The Boris for Corby rumour has already started, apparently...

I think it may be a little soon for Johnson. I'm also not sure Corby's the sort of place where he'd go down all that well - the town itself is solidly working-class, and I wonder whether Johnson's bumbling toff act would be more of a hindrance than a help in a place like that. Plus, if he was to lose that seat it would be a massive blow to his leadership ambitions so there would be a lot of risk involved.

I see Labour's candidate is the son of Phil Sawford, who used to be on the Socialist Campaign Group.

I think there might be a Boris Bounce after his milking of the Olympics, but like everything else I suspect that will be a London thing. I can't see Corbyites going for 'the legend' either. I'm not sure he has the self-awareness to see that.

Total Politics quotes an unnamed Tory MP as saying Corby 'isn't Boris' type of constituency'. Also, this has the makings of yet another lost Lib Dem deposit.

If Boris doesn't go for it can I be the first person to refer to him as 'Bottler Boris' ?

Andy Sawford (Labour candidate)
35 year old Sawford was born and grew up locally, the son and grandson of Corby steelworkers. Educated at a local comprehensive school, he then went to Durham University where he gained a degree in history [good man]. Andy came back to work in Corby for the former MP, Phil Hope before running a small business and eventually becoming the chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit.

So, local lad done good, 'real world' experience etc. Good luck to him.

Agree on Boris not making a stand. This soon would be a bit too blatant, too obvious. As far as Cameron's concerned, the best thing he can do with the guy is keep him in London, and roll him out as a cheerleader during by-elections to buoy up the local candidate and take the spotlight off the opposition. But whatever happens, keep him out of parliament.

And, apparently, the Tories are lining up to chuck Boris' past and present misdemeanours back in his face.

I am now forcing my fingers into my eyes until geometric shapes start to appear just so I can get rid of the image searing itself into my consciousness of the android for Corby doing the nasty with the dirty digger.
