Feck. Unpack that. He sees the world so much in terms of himself that he can't even comprehend that other people will pay the 5p charge as well, millions of times, so the money going to charity will, at first, be considerable. It's only about him. That sums up the TPA, does it not.

I know for a fact that Sainsbury locals sell little foldaway bags for £1. So the 21st time he uses it he's in profit, plus he's got a little bag for other occasions...

When I'm in France I don't have the choice - no bags in the supermarkets - so I make the huge intellectual leap to - wait for it - take a bag with me! In fact, just like I do in England. Of course it's so hard that I have to lie down with a copy of the Express over my head afterwards.
Mm, I always take bags with me when I go to the supermarket - whether or not they give out free bags. As well as the obvious environmental benefits, it helps somewhat for budgeting: if I've only brought three bags with me, I'm not going to be able to carry that extra bottle of pop home.

I've got about 20 or 30 of the canvas foldaway bags. They're enormously useful, apart from shopping. We use them for packing on the journeys to & from France, fill them up with stuff to come back to Blighty, when they get a bit old and tatty they become semi-permanent storage in the loft, or even used for carrying small firewood. About £2 a pop. Last for years. Ditto the bottle carrier ones.

Then there's the big hessian bags - I like to take those shopping to the farm shop or market. Very useful. I've even got a nice purple one from the local lavender farm...

How was I completely unaware of this daily mail campaign ? I thought porn was the mails obsession.

Hang on, I'm certain I can recall the mail getting very annoyed about plastic bage charges in the past and that they saw it as an unfair tax on shoppers or some such nonsense.

When did they change their minds? And when did they start caring about the environment?

In the world of the rightist press:
Extra charges for stuff can't be called a tax anymore.
Because that would be like the bedroom tax which isn't a tax as any fool knows.

I use a TopShop Clash bag I've had for years - here's one that was on Ebay a while ago,

And a cream colored one from the Japanese sock shop Tabio that they were giving away with purchases on their 3rd anniversary. It has a pink sumi-style sock on it and Japanese writing.

Swag.
