This is a classic example of why Shittlejhon is so popular - his references chime with his audience. They 'get' what he's saying straight away. He uses the lowest common denominator of "retro" popular culture. Everybody over a certain age is aware of Minder, The Sweeney, Dad's Army etc. No complicated explanations (which his readers probably wouldn't understand anyway) are necessary.
Indeed. He's had to explain the rules of Pointless on more than one occasion although that could just have been padding.

He's done it to troll, too. Can't remember who it was exactly, but some reasonably famous actor died and rather than talk about any of their career defining performances, Dicky said that their career highlight had been a villain of the week on Minder.

He said it about Warren Mitchell and his one appearance in The Sweeney.

This will be the twice 'Larry' winning actor who played Shylock in a 1981 adaptation of The Merchant of Venice?

Really?

Warren Mitchell - an award-winning actor on stage, screen and TV for over half a century who created arguably the most memorable comic character of his era. Who appeared once in The Sweeney and played the part of a middle-aged man seduced into crime by having his head turned by a young femme fatale with what can only be described as his usual genius. Who in one scene when he was trying to escape from the police wearing her clothes gave a masterclass in humour and pathos. Whose career Littlejohn summed up as "Hur, hur, he played a bloke in a dress". You can only shake your head at what sort of mentality could come up with something like that, and be glad that you don't possess it..

But yeah, I'm sure Warren Mitchell isn't the only one who's received the Minder/Sweeney treatment. But he was a good recent example.

New prison rules, apparently. Cue a detailed fisking of them and razor sharp demo...oh sorry it's a Porridge parody and a few gay jokes.

In which Dickie feels all betrayed by something he really doesn't understand, and concludes that it's everyone's fault and it's just not fair.
