A big opportunity for a potential Lib Dem gain from an ERG Tory might be on the horizon - the MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, Chris Davies, has just pleaded gulity to two charges of fraudulent expense claims. If a recall petition is successful, then a by-election for the seat will be held.

Brecon and Radnorshire was a Lib Dem seat between 1997 and 2015, although they failed to quite reach 30% during GE2017.

The Lib Dem MP Layla Moran will not be standing for the leadership when Sir Vince Cable stands down, which he has said he will do later this year, the Evening Standard reports. A new MP, she had been seen as a potential outside-chance, fresh face candidate. Her decision means that Jo Swinson, the current deputy, must be the clear favourite.
Layla looks quite good. Shame.

As an Orange Booker, Swinson is a bit of a worry, after all that's what got us into this mess in the first place. I'd rather have a leader closer to Beveridge than Gladstone.

I expect Swinson will go where the votes are, policy wise. The problem is having been in the Coalition, and all the verbal hostages to fortune that leaves lying around. Even if she's done some good stuff in a brief, like Davey, she'll still be on record everywhere having defended Osborne and spoken bollocks about Gordo "making us like Greece". I don't think they can afford any of that if they want to get back to pre-Coalition levels.

^^This.
Swinson comes across as quite amenable, particularly when compared to other party leaders - but then so did Nick Clegg once upon a time.
