Why does the government have to write to everybody when there are briefings on the TV every night relaying the same information?
Not everybody in the country has a television (sticks hand up), and not everybody who does will be watching these briefings.

At least a mailshot to every household in the country ensures everyone receives the information. What the recipients do with it is up to them.
I've heard similar on the steam wireless though.

It’s preaching to the converted though. Those who are likely to read such a letter properly will be those who are already adhering to safe practice.

Unfortunately, there’s a significant minority who will disregard the message because they are thick and/or don’t give a toss.

Not even that

Outside of work, with it's limited access to the web (so many things are verboten it's unreal - even the news videos on the BBC website are blocked!) my only access is via my phone, with it's limited data allowance.

I gave up on radio ages ago. I'd spend a few minutes going through the dial trying to find something to listen to, get fed up, and turn it off again.

To summarise:

Not everyone has access to TV, not everyone has access to the internet, not everyone listens to the radio. The only way to guarantee information is received by every household is to physically put it through the letterbox. Once this is done, it's up to the recipients to decide what to do with it.

From December. Remember this the next time Boris the Bogroll Bandit has the brass neck to lead the aplause for NHS workers.

As a doctor I have to speak out: Johnson has contributed to thousands of deaths
Andrew Meyerson
The prime minister’s neglect of the NHS has resulted in too many tragedies. If he were a doctor, he would be struck off

Boris was meant to be coming out of isolation tomorrow but one of the journalist on the ITV lunchtime news seemed to be suggesting that Boris might listen to medical advice and stay in isolation a little longer. How convenient it will now be left to other members of the cabinet to conduct the briefings while the death toll continues to rise and more awkward questions are being asked about testing and PPE. He will undoubtedly be back at the lectern sometime next week when the number of daily deaths start to drop and testing is finally ramped up.

Apparently Liz Truss is going to be doing today's daily briefing! Hopefully the markets will have closed before she starts speaking or else the FTSE will take another hammering.

To be absolutely fair though, if he comes out too quick and infects someone, the crucifixion would be much worse.
